Of course, the real argument really boils down to what makes people happy and can the government stand in the way of it. For example, maybe women would be happier sharing a high-status man rather than having a low-status man all to herself (assuming her decision isn't influenced by angels with swords).

It's not going to be your average relief society sister having to take in a younger wife, it's more like relief society sisters will be abandoning their husbands in droves. What do you tell your wife when in the heat of an argument, she declares, "I'm going to leave your underperforming ass and take up with the stake president, and I can do it righteously and morally and be celebrated for my spirituality."

The crux is not so much the multiple wives; it's that a woman can leave her husband at the drop of a hat for a polygamous relationship. Permission to divorce. Permission to leave. At least she's doing you the favor of divorcing you before taking up with somebody better; that has not been the case historically. And with polygyny legal, she wont have to divorce you- she can just go remarry someone else. Men will lose all control over their women, because with polygyny, a marriage certificate means nothing.

I think another discussion about the church's stance on same sex marriage is just what the doctor ordered. People need to know where the church stands on this issue and a discussion during church will most definitely be a productive exchange of a wide variety of ideas and opinions. I'm guessing people will leave that meeting having learned something new.

At least they'll leave knowing they need to pray more if they're not in agreement with the leadership on this issue:

As kids get older they should be advised to be on the lookout for the woman looking for the better provider. Do everything they can to dissaude her advances toward their Dad.

Think of it. Dad is worth 20 million. 5 kids. After the government gets their's, kids get about 3 million each. Think what happens if Dad marries 2 more women who bring along 5 kids each to the party?? Original kids go from rich to middle class.

Not sure how inheritance will work in a polygamous setting. For sure, traditional divorce notions like the mother always getting custody, and alimony, will be thrown out. In gay marriages, it's not always so clear who is the nurturer and who is the breadwinner. Also, competition for the affections of your spouse just doubled with a whole nother gender opening up.

Also, it will be easy to get a green card to 'Merica. I can set up my own shop, and marry them all- women and men. Just pay me $20,000 and I will be willing to marry you for 7 years.

This part is what stood out to me most. Maybe because I'm cynical, but it seems like this official statement isn't so much a response to the SCOTUS ruling as much as a response to the debate regarding Elder Christofferson's comments about supporting such rulings on social media. The official statement seemed to have a much stronger tone than with less wiggle room.

I like you am also old fashioned and thus prefer the Supreme Court declaration that heterosexual and homosexual are the accepted norms be their only declaration on marriage law for a while.
