    Phil Robertson v. A&E

It will be interesting to see this battle unfold. On the one hand you have gay activists and on the other you have the religious right and in the middle you have A&E. A&E was really put in a no win situation here.

UPDATED: The news comes after the reality star compared being gay to bestiality, drawing ire from LGBT groups including GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign.

You have a lot more than gay activists. The PC culture is alive and very strong. It isn't just the progressives either. A lot of independents and conservatives do not think it is worth the fight to be labeled a bigot or worse for having an opinion contrary to what is deemed to be politically correct.

If you have any type of career that involves dealing with the public, you would be well advised to choose your words carefully.

Never seen the show, but the guys strong suit can't be being really bright. You give an interview to GQ??

My initial guess was that the Robertson's would walk from the show. I still think that. You're right in that A&E is the loser in all of this. Gone is their moneymaker and biggest cable TV show in history. The Robertson's won't be hurt by all of this. They probably won't be the face of Walmart anymore, but that shelf life was nearing an end anyway. Their demographic identifies with them and their beliefs. And at the end of the day if a duck hunter wants a duck call they're still going to buy one from Duck Commander. Regardless, it is events like this that remind me of why I don't spend much time on Facebook. I think Phil Robertson is more eloquent than half of the arguments I have read on each side of this.

I've never watched a single episode of that show, but apparently it's an enormous ratings success.

I did see something about that guy starting ahead of Terry Bradshaw at QB in college. Bradshaw was only one year behind him and couldn't get ahead of Robertson. Before Robertson's senior year he just decided he didn't want to play anymore. How often do they bring that up on the show?

More interesting to me is whether Bradshaw would have ever been the #1 pick by the Steelers had Robertson stayed around for his senior year. Bradshaw, at best, would have had only one year as a starter in college. Bradshaw's stats don't look extremely impressive now, but the game in the 70s was different and the rules were substantially different. I wonder if it would have been the Raiders and Cowboys winning all the Super Bowls (well, seven of them at least) in the 70s instead of combining for only three of them.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I don't think its so much PC culture as it is the majority of Americans are genuinely not in to "gay bashing" anymore. Not that he was necessarily gay bashing, just stating his religious stance on homosexuality. But if AE did nothing the backlash would have been real and not just a vocal minority of the PC police.

He wasn't necessarily "gay bashing", just stating his religious stance on homosexuality. So why is he taking so much heat and possibly losing the show? Because even if you are "not" bashing someone, if the PC folks say you are, then you are.

I will be surprised if there are many who stick up for the guy. It just isn't worth it. At least I know if I actually read what he said and determined he wasn't "bashing", I wouldn't stick my neck out and stick up for the guy and perhaps get the labeling crowd labeling me.

You and he are built from the same mold. That's for sure.

Thanks. You must have turned over a new leaf. You usually try to demean me.

How do you feel about him associating homosexuality and bestiality.

Before I can answer, I need to go look up what bestiality is. It sounds bad though.

Edit: I looked it up and I would consider that to be "gay bashing". I had responded to the premise that he wasn't "gay bashing".

I wonder how the "progressives" on this board feel about the guy Obama just hired, Podesta, equating republicans to a cult worthy of Jonestown? I would say that is pretty bad and worthy of firing the guy even though he was just hired.

Lebowski, how about you? Do you think Podesta should be fired?

The show is so popular and the vast majority of its viewership aligns with Robertson on this issue. He will have plenty of supporters and will come out ahead financially if he so desires. Think Chik-fil-a.

The way that I read it is that he equated both as far as saying that both were sin. He didn't say that homosexuals are those who engage in bestiality are one and the same.

I disagree with your assumptions. Its the PC culture. I also agree with you that if what he said was "gay bashing" it was mild. He was just stating his opinion and belif on the matter. It shouldn't be that big of a deal. It's a very commonly held view.

But I really like this quote from teh articloe someone here linked to:

"Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe," GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz said

Nothing like the GLAAD spokesperson clarifying who is and is not a true christian for the rest of us. Humorous.

I was confused by that comment....what lies did he tell about the gay community? Is she saying that his thoughts on homosexuality being a sin was a lie about the community? Wouldn't that be a lie about what is or is not a sin rather than about the homosexual community? It really was a dumb statememt.
