Need more detail on the definition of "Belong to a religous club". Otherwise, I'm left to understand that Berkeley residents are more religious than Highland Park residents. That doesn't add up based on what I know of both cities. Perhaps I missed it when the Evangelicals moved out and the Heathens moved into Highland Park. I could be wrong though. If one would have asked me which city had higher incomes and home prices, I would have stated unequivocally Berkeley.

That is a good question. According to some other data about one 3rd of Berkeley'ers are religious. So belonging to a religious club must mean something else.

As for the Heathens moving in, I have been told that John W. Hinckley, Jr. (who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan) lived in Highland Park at one time so maybe.

If no one here believes that government is the answer to all problems, then I am glad. But it's not a strawman if it's believed by many, many people.

Yes.

And the thing is, I can see that side of the argument.

Problem with poverty? More, better funded government programs for welfare, job placement, etc.

Problem with gophers? Government program to hire gopher exterminators.

Problem with flooding? Government program to build levies, run-offs, etc.

Problem with hangnails? Government program educating on how to prevent them, and surgical repair through universal healthcare.

In theory, these are all fantastic. I can absolutely see how someone believes government is the answer to all problems.

The number of progressives doesn't matter. What matters is that Detroit has been in trouble for a long time, and the local government has chosen to enact liberal policies in an attempt to fix things.

This has failed.

Now, would conservative policies also have failed? Probably.

But I'm tired of hearing how government can fix everything. Detroit is evidence that this is not true.

I know very little about Detroit's current problems, except that it is often compared with Birmigham and Jefferson County, which (apparently) until recently was the proud owner of the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S history. Watching the county jump through hoops is equal parts amusing and depressing.

From my perspective, widespread corruption was the major driver of our financial issues, moreso than policy--although it is true that certain policies may have facilitated that corruption.

Less than half of Detroit's residents over 16 are working. Unemployment is 18.6% and that is down from over 27% in 2009.

Another strawman. I haven't argued any number. I think that around 10% of peopled fit your hypothesis. And, that is an insignificant percentage.

Its the same in Detroit. Widespread corruption is the main reason for its demise.
