Maybe you missed this part in the article I linked above...

In 2020, for instance, more than 560,000 ballots were rejected (that's nearly 1% of the total).

So many loopholes!!!! So much variability and opportunity for the system to go wrong!!! How can it be trusted!?!?!!
If someone doesn't look like their voter ID they will do a provisional ballot and still allow the person to vote. He or she may need to have their ID updated or produce another valid ID later. In any case, voting in person the voter is immediately notified if their ballot is in a provisional state. With mail-in voting their ballot may be counted until their ballot is "cured", if their state allows for that.

Right. That’s my point. There are effective ways to run elections with voter id. There are effective ways of running elections with mail in ballots. There are ways to screw up both.

Both can work and they depend on how the system/procedures/processes are setup and implemented.

        • I don't often agree with Ted but I do agree with him on the fact that signature matching is stupid. Signatures are a very outdated method of identity verification. Many youth can't even sign their name in the traditional sense these days as many schools no longer teach cursive writing. The youth instead simply print their name in block letters. Unlike Ted, I don't have a problem with mail-in or drop-off ballots, but I think humans are smart enough to come up with something better than a signature as a means of verification.

          • Well signatures are the legal standard for personal consent and statements for pretty much everything, so until that changes….

Hopefully the next generation can handle it until things change.

            • I imagine part of the delay with California is that it has kept a default mail-in ballot process since moving to that during the pandemic. Every voter in the state receives a mail-in ballot weeks before the election, which presumably creates a greater number of mail-in voters than the previous opt-in mailed ballot system.

There are a lot of people's votes not counting because most likely them simply forgetting to sign their ballots or something stupid.

Do you think 560K ballots could change an election?

If in person voting is dumb then just let everyone vote online... there shouldn't be too much fraud, right? Could use digital signatures. It could instantly notify you if your ballot is incorrect and allow you to cure it.

*For the record, I do not recommend this given some things I have seen "in the wild".
