I'm no economist, so I don't understand all the implications of a minimum wage hike. And I get the argument that as you increase the minimum wage there is a disincentive to hire people. But a lot of times this argument seems too cute by half. If there was an across the board wage increase everywhere in the states, I think that would mitigate some of the disincentives. But if you're going to have a federal minimum wage, you might as well have something close to a livable wage. But that's me. I still like the idea of UBI

I don't understand how having a nationwide minimum wage can be effective. Receiving $15/hr in Seattle, SF, or NYC is vastly different from being paid the same amount working as a bagger at the Piggly Wiggly in Podunk, Alabama.

It's a "minimum." Effective's got nothing to do with it. It's saying, at the very least, that yall mother<redacteds> have to pay "AT LEAST" this much per hour to do business in these United States. The Several States are not prohibited from raising it even higher.

Also, I'd be fine with an "adult" minimum wage vs a teenager working for the summer wage. As for adults, there are many people who are too unintelligent to rise above the minimum wage, and a national minimum protects them from exploitation. You can't educate them out of their lack of intelligence. A minimum wage protects the truly unintelligent from exploitation. There are more of these people in the workforce than many people care to admit. As someone who worked for McDonald's for five years and Pizza Hut for six, I can assure you that there are some truly fucking stoopid people out there who need the protection that government regulation can give them. Otherwise, they'll be indigent for life, a life often punctuated by crime and poverty and many, many, many, many more children of equal IQ.

Are those several states where the cost of living is much higher than the average already providing a wage higher than the minimum? I don't know the answer. But if they are not, why would we expect them to?

Wuap...you said that a national minimum wage protects them (unintelligent employees) from exploitation. Isn't the inverse of this that these employees are exploiting the employer? I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon or anything like that....but I feel like what you are promoting here is basically the government putting the onus on the business owner to make sure that people have a living wage. I'm conflicted. We are commanded to lift our brother up...but to what cost? Should that not matter? I think about this often.

All I know is that I welcome the automation of jobs. I pump my own gas, I order my food online and I pick it up, I check myself out of Costco/Sam's Club/Grocery store. The less people I have to deal with the better. CFA and In-and-Out pay almost $20 an hour for starters. Those are two of the best run businesses out there. They get the best of the best. I choose to eat there because of the level of service.

People rail on the amount that the McDonald's CEO makes. Maybe he shouldn't make that much. But the typical McDonald's franchise owner make $150k a year only. That isn't a ton of money for the bullshit that they have to put up with. Raising the minimum wage is going to put that owner out of business. We know damn well Mickey D's isn't going to lower the monthly franchise costs.

              I'm conflicted for sure.

The Dems should have voted for Tom Steyer... he wanted a $22 minimum wage. But the dumb dem voters fell for the promise of $2000, student loan forgiveness, and another BS instead. BTW, how's that going for y'all?

Amen Brother... I love automation and robots. I can't wait until drones start delivering our food to our front door and we don't have to tip the dumbass pizza delivery boy for spitting on my food.

Government regulation of pay has already proven it closes businesses: https://www.supermarketnews.com/issu...hazard-pay-law

To pizza delivery boy, how about you learn to program or get a job installing solar panels?

AOC sez the minimum wage "should be $24 an hour"...

Why isn't the minimum wage $24/hr in NY? The NY dems are off their game and should be showing the rest of the country how great a $24/hr min wage would be.

I’m for a minimum wage, even a federal minimum wage, but I’m not for one that sets it at or above the poverty level. Pushing for a $15 minimum wage doesn’t make sense at a federal level. As wuap has pointed out, the people who needs a high minimum wage are adults with no marketable skills. Putting more cash into their hands isn’t going to fix that situation. There’s a reason most of them have no marketable skills and it’s because they have little discipline in investing in themselves. So you give them money and they aren’t going to spend it to better their situation. It won’t go towards long-term home ownership or education or into a brokerage account. They’ll spend it mostly on frivolities. It’s also why the church doesn’t just hand people money and instead pays their bills on their behalf. It’s also why I don’t like UBI, at least if UBI is mean to replace social programs. Having social programs ensures these people have their needs met and taken care of, even if it’s at the most basic level.

I used to hate the idea of Social Security back when I was going through a Libertarian phase. However, after spending some time working with people in getting their finances in order I quickly realized that most people do not have the discipline or knowledge to plan for and save for their own retirement. Having the government do it on their behalf has resulted in more economic stability for them and for the country.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

If I'm reading this right it looks like 1.5% of workers are at or below the federal minimum wage. Of those about half are in the 16-24 year old demographic.

I currently have two people in my household making under $15/hour, so I am all in on this one!

(I am not one of them)

My wife made less than $15 as a preschool teacher, and that required an associates degree in early childhood education. This was 6 years ago and I am sure that the pay scales have not changed in that time.
