How could a mid-level like you even be certain how you feel?Originally posted by The_Douger View PostIndeed, doctorcoug has been adamant about trying to show me my place. Strangely, I feel the same as I always have.

I'll bet he didn't poll well to the question: "who better understands the pains of the middle class?"Originally posted by All-American View PostOne of my law school professors wrote an article once upon a time detailing what would happen if taxes should be raised on his family, which (with the income he and his wife were respectively bringing in) just eclipsed the $250,000 mark. He noted that with less money to go around, he might have to dismiss the nanny, fire the gardner, or, if things really got tight, have one or the other stop working, or at least cut back the number of hours earned. Any way they went about it, somebody would be losing income, and thus, tax dollars, all for the sake of paying somebody in the department of transportation a six-figure salary.
He was eviscerated, of course, as people didn't feel terribly sympathetic about somebody earning $250,000, but it was never an emotional argument-- strictly an empiracle one that looked directly at the pocketbook and how laws would affect it.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

It appears the House will pass it with a minority of the majority voting for it. The hardcore rightwingers are going to be pissed and the debt ceiling is going to have some really intense fireworks. This is teed up well for them. The President was adamant that this fight was a "tax fight only." So I am sure he will be well disposed to the next fight being a "spending fight only."Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Sure, if the government defaults, we will all have empathy for Greece.Originally posted by frank ryan View Postempathy matters. It isn't all about money.
Empathy will do little to prevent a default. Focusing on money is what matters most.

Slavery was helpful from a purely economic perspective. Plutocrats tend to like that institution.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostSure, if the government defaults, we will all have empathy for Greece.

Once democrats decided they wanted the middle class in their court they put us on the course to either insolvency or domestic instability once we have no choice but to live within our means. One gets the middle class by not taxing them and one gets lower classes by showing empathy, the expensive kind that is.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostSure, if the government defaults, we will all have empathy for Greece.

I think this is honestly a good move for republicans. Had it stalled they would have been scapegoated.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostIt appears the House will pass it with a minority of the majority voting for it. I thought the book "Starship Troopers" made a decent argument along the lines of nobody should be allowed to vote who had not demonstrated some type of selfless devotion to the Country above and beyond venal interests. In the books example it was military service, but I think that is obviously limiting in our instance as not all qualify for service in our armed forces. I don't think we need to change but I thought the argument was interesting.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostAnd this is why I think we should get back to the days of property rights and votes. If you don't pay federal income tax, you don't get a vote. They have no financial skin in the game, other than the taxpayers skin.
