Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

    • Kasich is the guy. Unfortunately I don't think he'll make himself noticed in time.

If he doesn't perhaps the smart candidate will nab him as VP?

          • Trump is such a blathering idiot. What he said on vaccinations is so ridiculously stupid it should be totally disqualifying. The fact that he would say something like this shows his horrible judgment and total lack of understanding of the scientific method. I can't wait for Trump to go down in flames.

"You take this little beautiful baby, and you pump — I mean, it looks just like it is meant for a horse, not for a child, and we had so many instances, people that work for me, just the other day, 2-years-old, beautiful child went to have the vaccine and came back and a week later got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic."

His comments about immigration/Mexicans were even worse, in my opinion, and just like the vaccinations comments were totally made up and meant to mobilize a certain segment of the primary voters. Which indicate that he's not an idiot but that he's lying on purpose- hey I guess he wouldn't be the first!

              • I didn't watch the debate. Trump could believe what he's saying, but I wouldn't put it past him to just be pandering to the anti-vax crowd. At any rate, we all know he's an idiot. But I read Paul's response to the question, and he deserves heaps of scorn. He should know better than to give anti-vaxxers any credence. He's a worse idiot.

The funny part is how people think that isn't what the other candidates are. They all think they are super awesome and have all the answers, the others have just been trained to say things in a different way. Trump's only difference is he is bombastic. But I do agree with you that if you vote for any of them, you get what you deserve.

I think your point has some validity but disagree that trump is the same as the others. Trump is, simply, not as well-prepared. He may be smart, or at least savvy, but he uses that intelligence only in promoting himself. He was more excited to tell everyone that immigration was only an issue because of his recent outrageous claims on the topic than he was to actually talk about his immigration ideas (perhaps because his ideas are neither new nor likely to be helpful). He is not well-informed, he is interested in advancing only his own interests and he lacks both nuance and empathy.

You are certainly correct that his public comments are full of bombast and vinegar, but it seems to hide an utter lack of command of the details on most issues. Moreover, his bombast is used only to promote himself, in the tradition of P.T. Barnum, as he plays the public for the easy marks he clearly thinks we are. He is just like the class clown in junior high school, hiding behind his jokes and his bold statements to avoid having to admit his weaknesses, of which he is all too well aware. Thus Trump demands action but, when asked for details of the action he seeks, retreats to the "I will hire the best people to help me" and "I know how to get along with people like Putin" lines rather than provide them. You may think all of the candidates are clowns, and you may be correct, but Trump stands apart; he is the valedictorian of clown college.trump.jpg
