Ecuador has a ridiculous socialist leader. You should go there. I remember on cougarguard you were contemplating moving to China for political reasons. Is that still a possibility?

You point out a reason to be reluctant on Ecuador. I dislike him immensely, but there are a lot of ex-pats in cool places at a cheaper price than the US.

What I like about Hong Kong is its spirit of entrepreneurialism. Mainland China is another thing. If you're not Chinese, it wouldn't be so grand.

Yeah, robots will be replacing lawyers, doctors, and other brainless occupations. All we are going to need in the future is engineers to design the robots.

I've been to some pretty cool places, and while the thought of living there is initially attractive, the idea of being thousands of miles from so many friends, relatives and loved ones immediately kills any such notion. But I suppose if such relationships can be satisfactorily maintained via email (mine can't), then one should bail.

I really wish we could fast forward five years, as I will not enjoy the next four years of political discussion. Maybe on a cheerier note, what countries make the best places for US ex-pats to live at the cheapest rates. So far, I've compiled Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Any other options? Unfortunately for me, I am not at the stage where this is feasible, but if I were ten years down the road, I'd be outta here once Her Royal Highness sits on her throne. This is going to be just plain awful. And I thought the past sixteen years were terrible.

It is not practical for reasons that you mention. For the most part it is not practical because most of us make our living uniquely tailored to our state or nation. With access to a good airport, enough shekels in the bank, and a favorable climate, however, I would have no reason to live in the US over any place else. As you point out, there are lots of great places to live and once you are outside, the politics of that region are less important and one can just check out of that discussion. Part of my business is helping people give up their US citizenship. The numbers are not astronomical, but it is increasing with the worldwide income tax levy. Most nations do not do this.

That's why I've always envied physicians, who could pick up and make a decent living anywhere in the world.

However, ex pats can create enclaves where you escape from the world at a cheaper rate and just check out. That would be the purpose of leaving, not to find the ideal place, but to check out of the political aspect of life.

Costa Rica is a great choice, but I suspect it may become pricier. Ecuador is based on the Dollar but the current controls are excessive. HK has a favorable tax structure.

Okay, so you could move to Ecuador and "check out" at a cheaper rate I suppose, but not Hong Kong. Also, if you can just "check out" in Ecuador and H.K., why can't you just check out in the U.S.?
