That asshole with the sunglasses is worse than the Obamaphone lady. Good hell. For whatever reason, our country has created an increasing underclass of people who are hopeless. They're uneducated and they and their children are going nowhere. Some are looking for a handout and others are looking for a tyrant.

I didn't read all of Andrew Sullivan's column and maybe he mentions this, but when the elites lose control of the system then you open it up to the passions of the common man, for good and for bad. IMO, the common man in the 40s and 50s is a different story from the common guy now given the hollowing out of the middle class. If that toothless South Park parody in that video is now the common man, vs. the WWII vet who grew up during the Depression working at the Ford plant -- well, that explains how we went from Eisenhower vs. Adlai Stevenson to Trump vs. Hillary Clinton.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

        • That Andrew Sullivan article is epic.

You watch that video of the guy arguing with Cruz and you realize that over the next few decades with increased automation, increased mechanization, there are going to be more and more people who are just totally incapable of contributing anything to the economy.

Makes me wonder if there is something to the "basic income" idea on the ballot in Switzerland right now. Maybe not a bad idea to dismantle all the ineffective patchwork social programs with high administrative costs in favor of just giving these masses some cash so they at least are less likely to become criminal, Neo-Nazis or terrorists or Trump voters or whatever. And honestly although I think work is good for the soul -- if the government could cushion the blow for the unskilled and increasingly obsolete working class folks in this country it might be better for everybody. If basic income led to a shortage of unskilled workers then that would be fine as it motivates businesses to automate everything possible.

So we need to stick with the elites because today's common man is worthless because the middle class has been hollowed out because of the elites.

I agree. Cruz disemboweled that guy and then helped him pick up the guts spilling from his stomach.

That is to say, I was very impressed.

Even Milton Friedman advocated a guaranteed minimum income. I'm coming around to the idea.

                            • A base income sounds good to me. Also some kind of tax system where maybe we could have around half the population not pay income tax would also be good. A tax credit for those whose income is low and maybe a $20 minimum wage.

I especially like the idea of a free college education. I would limit it though to those who graduate with some kind of degree in less than 10 years. If you over do it college students could get even more in love with entitlement stuff.

                              • Charles Murray has advocated a guaranteed income:

                                http://www.fljs.org/files/publications/Murray.pdf

The key is not providing an incentive to do something stupid -- like have kids you have no way of supporting. You have the guaranteed income and that's it, it's a zero sum game with the decisions you make.
