A Mormon vs a black man... this is what the country wanted from its foundation... Diversity and Equality! Everyone equal regardless of age...race... and religion. Having the Freedom to make these choices... Rights to vote and have our voices heard. Having a diverse people to choose as our leaders. From Freedom of speech to freedom of religion. We should be grateful for the blessings we have in this free country. Whether we believe it or not we are achieving goals and making history one day at a time. I'm proud to be an American and will support my leaders. we have come a long way since we came to this great land. May we all continue to strive for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness
Sorry for not posting actual meltdowns - my feed is actually full of the same sort of stuff that we've seen on here. But in the midst of all the angst, a couple made me smile.
If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

I guess it's because I only have 120 or so FB friends, but I saw virtually none of the weirdness or anger that's been presented in this thread. My oldest daughter (who lives in the Littleton, CO area that Romney needed to win big, but didn't) posted something this morning more reflective of my small circle of buddies.
I wasn't even looking for it, but a friend from Honduras put up this photo, taken this morning, of a maternity ward in Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras (a city of over 40,000 people).
Here's a link from a legitimate source. Honduras is having a major major crisis right now.

Ok, I'm reporting for my official meltdown. I don't do meltdowns (or much of anything political or controversial) on FB. FB meltdowns are like screaming at strangers on a busy street corner. At best you look like a crazy fool and at worst you start a fight and embarass yourself and your family and maybe lose friends as well.
I'll admit I'm still reeling. I don't think the world is going to end but I'm having to come to grips with the shifting ideology of the electorate. After five years of the economy in the mud, I thought people would be ready to give economic growth and fiscal responsibility a chance. That combination is our only way out of our problems. And we have some serious, serious problems. Our entitlement and government pension systems are a time bomb that comes closer to blowing up our unprecedented prosperity with each election cycle that passes without the problem being addressed.
Maybe I deserve a big drama queen emoticon. Maybe Obama will strike a grand bargain that will give the real reform we need. I would be the first to take my hat off to him if he does. I just don't see it happening, though, because that would require him to be honest with the public and tell them they were promised more stuff than we can pay for and it's time to stop robbing the future for our present comfort. After a protracted campaign of promising that our problems are solved with higher taxes, I'm not optimistic he can make that pivot.
I don't despise them, nor does my daughter. We just smile at those who have so much and yet complain about how awful things have become.
I thought before hitting the submit button, you are challenging someone you hold in high regard. Then I thought, it is always dumb to make a criticizm of one's child, especailly a daughter. Then in a moment of thought lapse, I hit submit anyway.
I guess I am a little sensitive in this area, not because I am rich, but because I know so many wonderful people who are rich. I have heard things like they are lucky, they are rich because they sacrifice their family, religion, name the thing of value, to pursue materail things.
I see these people giving freely of their funds, sure they can afford to, another one I hear all the time. I think of the hundreds of thousands of dollars one of these people have given to Operation Smile. I think of all of the kids who look normal due to their giving.
I don't know every rich person and so if I say the ones who look down on others are the minority, maybe I just haven't come in contact with as many of those.
Like Anthony Robbins once said. The rich have problems too, they just arrive at them in better style. I think they have the right to vent on what they see as wrong or a problem, even if they are materially better off than someone else.
I hope this doesn't come accross as further criticism of your post and I should have forgone hitting the submit button again. I am just trying to explain where I was coming from. We are still good friends, right?
I have a friend who earns about 750K per year and pays about 200K per year taxes. He loves to whine about how awful it is that he has to pay that much in taxes. I like to remind him that 750K - 200K = 550K.
People who earn a lot of money never like to admit that they might not be any more deserving of it than people who learn 10 times less.

Who/what determines who deserves what income levels?
Who/what determines who deserves what income levels?
That depends on the profession, unless you think about the world simplistically.
In medicine, it's standardized reimbursement rates. People who do procedures earn more. Dermatopathologists who read lots of slides get to bill per slide even though they can read them rapidly. That's why they make 1 million dollars per year. But their training is no more sophisticated than that of any other subspecialist who might make one tenth that much.
Don't kid yourself thinking that the free market determines everything. It's not that simple.

Because there are things in the world called scams. Then there are other things that I like to call legal scams. Do you think Bernie Madoff deserved his billions?

Probably not, but you speak to legal scams, and then refer to someone indicted for illegal activity. Which one is your friend who makes $750k - legal or illegal?

Godwin's law needs an addendum to reference Bernie Madoff when the discussion is about economics.
Due to unfairness. A better system would be to let those of great intellect, compassion and highly educated, like Sooner and Obama choose who deserves it. If only we could incorporate such a system, I am sure it would work better than letting the so called free market determine who deserves it. Unfairness could be a thing of the past.
