    Iranian Blogger Executed

    What an awful story.

That's an odd response. Yes, it is foolish to blame all of the problems in the region on the US and Israel. It is equally foolish to point to incidents like this as some sort of blanket exoneration for the US and Israeli actions.

Furthermore, what do you expect Mindful to say? Given the contents of the article, do you really expect her to put forth a harsh criticism of the current regime on a public message board?

The Iranian regime is brutal and evil and whatever the US and Israel are guilty of it is not this. Sometimes there is a right side and a wrong side. Not always, but sometimes. There is a different between democracies and despots.

She has nothing to worry about. She is consistently their stooge. Maybe I am a stooge for my government too. Fine. Being the stooge of Obama or Brown or Sarkozy is not the same as being the stooge of Stalin or Hitler or Pol Pot or the current Iranian regime, however. Or maybe I am wrong and there is moral equivalence there that I don't see.

Aha... If this is one of these "You're either with us or agin' us" types of questions, then you got me there. I vote for democracy. It's definitely better.

Sticking with our black/white theme, maybe you can answer this: The US has never done anything that would foster an environment in the Middle East where radical fundamentalism would resonate. True or False?

I think you are being quite unfair, but I will her respond to that. She's a big girl.

That seems a bit hyperbolic. Iran may be authoritarian and repressive but I don't believe they've killed millions of there own citizens have they?

I have got no access to the other side of the story yet ,but i will keep my eyes and ears open to hear from other sources But this is what i have learned from the story .First of all this was not an execution .The guy was taking his heart medicine while overdosing on tranquilizers, supplied by the prison. He did receive treatment in the prison infirmary. but unfortunately deceased nonetheless.

Second ,all the bloggers and activists are well informed that disobeying the present rules could leave them sanitized of any genuine discourse. Deliberately crossing the line (inserting insult and disgraceful statement)in order to destabilize the cyber climate ,is not any real critics interest.

So while i do support people who will not remain silent facing injustice ,i do think freedom in a civic society means establishing a free and safe territory to welcome different voices and ideas to be heard and discussed .Not a chaotic climate for a minority to sneak in and throw insult.

You don't need to kill millions of your own people ,or nuking noncombatants and civilians,or waging illegitimate war, to be put in this category ,you just need to be a US critic to deserve the position .Either this or i am a stooge for Iran!

In other words, people can be jailed for opposing the government by exercising their freedom of speech to the point of "insult?"

My bad. The article was vague on that point. Perhaps deliberately so. Thanks for clarifying.

What's wrong with an insult thrown by a minority? Who gets to define what is an insult? What is wrong with unfettered free speech?

I am getting out of this thread Jeff. Your views a much milder than mine and are still apparently offensive. I'll let you fight this one.

Can you imagine how much fun Bush/Cheney/Rove would have had if they could have operated under Iranian speech laws? Not that they would have, of course, but I'm sure they would have had some delightful fantasies.

The religious right, or to be fair, even our own faith on steroids might not be much different than how Iran functions. I offer up the FLDS as an example.

May be you could educate me on "the holy place of insult " in a political discourse?
