I think all this "They are in a better place now..." talk is simply a coping mechanism, and it is certainly not unique to Mormonism. Subconsciously our minds race and we feel a need to try to make some sense of out an unspeakable tragedy so we come up with notions like this.

I agree, it's a way to cope with the unspeakable and deal with the horror they must have felt right before their deaths. When told, mrs. myboynoah remarked that at least now they are with their mother.

In terms of faith, I would think that living out one's life here on earth trumps a premature departure. This is so sad.

It helps us feel better, or it can, anyway. According to our beliefs they are indeed in a better place. But...they also will never grow up, be teenagers, play little league baseball, experience young love, get married, go to college, have children, etc. Their grandparents won't get to watch them grow up. That's all been taken from all of them in a cruel and selfish act. That's the part that I struggle with.

It might be that you know you're going to jail and that you killed their mom, a twisted thinking could lead you to, "they'll be better off dead than living with this infamy."

From a strictly doctrinal perspective, we don't really know whether the kids are with their mother, nor if they really ever will be. We don't have enough detail about the spirit world to know how things really work and we don't know what sort of exaltation the mother will eventually receive after judgment.

I guess that doesn't sound as comforting.

No, these people are not "in a better place." There place was here, together.

It's too bad this sick bastard of a man didn't eat a bullet or hang himself rather than taking these three beautiful people with him.

Today, they are not in a better place. They had Susan's parents and family who would have raised them well....to adulthood. To see and feel and experience all the things that this life has to offer.

Instead, these cute little boys walked trustingly into their "fathers" care and were incinerated by a betrayal so vile...so horrific.

Sickening. So horrible. I was just commenting to my wife that the boys were probably starting to put things together, much like Elizabeth Smart's sister. I can picture Josh coaxing information out of them and realizing they remember too much. What a sick coward.

This is tragic for Susan, the boys and Susan's family. For Josh, it was unfair because he never had to physically suffer the consequences of his actions. For his father, it was great because he's sitting in a cell because, in part, he was protecting his obviously guilty POS son. For Josh's sister who has also help protect her brother, it's nice because she can live the rest of her life knowing that her nephews would be alive if she would have done the right thing.

Josh Powell deserves to rot in hell for eternity, but he also deserved to be punished in this life as well.
