Why didn't the police just put zip-ties on their wrists, and drag them to a paddy wagon? Why the use of a chemical weapon in the face of non-threatening protesters? It is unbelievable that the police thought this would accomplish something useful. Instead they end up beating a hasty retreat, leaving the quad uncleared and in the hands of the protesters.
Kristoff writes a nice Op-Ed about how these cases of brutality harden the Occupy movement. His piece should also be cited in woot's income gap thread, because it addresses that issue, and correctly (IMO) connects it to the problems faced by public education.Comment

It seems to me more akin to the war on drugs. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it's a good idea to attack it with a sledgehammer. Maybe the law is wrong, maybe the law should be suspended in this case, maybe this particular group of law-breakers should be handled with some finesse, etc.Originally posted by Moliere View Post
