Has anyone been following this? I've seen snippets here and there but finally started reading about it today. Apparently its been going on for about three weeks and today they had thousands of protestors marching in Lower Manhattan. Even after reading about the movement, I'm still a little unclear as to their objectives. I understand they're upset about bank bailouts, but they're kind of late on that one. I wonder if this will get any real nationwide traction, kind of like a counter-tea party movement.

300 people protested in SLC and it got news coverage. Wow, 300.

I think it is a protest against the rich. There are elements of Wall St. that I myself would be willing to march against, but these folks are aiming blindlessly at anything that is properous.

Why is this news? Because it's cool and hip and uses social media and that is just about the coolest thing out there because look what happened over in Egypt and this could really turn into something like that, and besides, this is the Tea Party of the left and it finally shows that Obama's base is really getting energized and this will mean big things during the next election despite the fact the we're experiencing the worst economy in years so it is really neat to see these thousands of people, young and old, banding together to make a statement about what they want out of life and the direction the country should take because this is all about social media and the effect it plays in our lives and how powerful it can be.

My friend Nathalie Rothschild writes for a British publication called Spiked and went down there and hung out and did a piece on it entitled - "Monty Python's Occupy Wall Street."

Why is this news?

I think these minor protests here in Utah get covered so the local media feels they are in on the big national stories. When they get together at a convention Brian Williams says, how about the wall st. protest we covered. Deenie Wimmer, says yea we covered it in Utah.

I found it quite funny on one of the national stations they showed where all the protests were taking place talking about the spread across the nation. Salt Lake City was listed. LOL, 300 people part of the wave across the nation.

Hopefully RF you had a place close by to attend. If not I will try and find out when the next one here in SLC is.

On the radio this morning they said that 23 people slept overnight in front of the city hall to participate in the protest. I guess the unemployment rate is lower in Houston than in other places.

The Daily Show did a nice piece on Occupy Wall Street contrasting the way the protests are handled in the media vs the actual coherence that can be found on the street.

This was from two nights ago. I think they covered it last night too, but I haven't watched yet.

How incredibly ironic is it that The Daily Show is presenting actual, unbiased stories on the reporting disparity while corporate media continues to push an agenda (whether to the right or to the left)?

3000+ protesters in Seattle last night, and it will likely get big over the weekend. The police relented and decided to let the protesters set up a big tent to keep people warm and dry.

A local company makes a jacket that turns into a rainsuit that turns into a bivy tent. They passed around dozens of their jackets to the protesters. At least two of the news channels showed protesters wearing the jackets, discussing the jackets, showing the logo, showing people in the background setting up the tent, describing the ground pad, etc. IMO it was one of the most BRILLIANT pieces of guerilla marketing I have seen. Right product, right place, right time, and PERFECT product placement.

On the news last night they interviewed a local woman at the protest. She complained that, despite having two Masters degrees and being out of grad school for over a year, she is still on food stamps.

If a person has enough smarts to obtain TWO Masters degrees, whom can they blame if there is no market for the degrees? I am almost certain she is up to her eyeballs in college loan debt as well.

Sorry, but I fail to see how her situation is caused by Wall Street.

Well, they did organize their own counter protest mocking the Tea Party. So...no.

Also, I watched the segment and while he makes his usual good points about media and political hypocrisy, he did really do any sort of unbiased reporting on the actual events. At least not in the linked segment. He didn't clear up what they were protesting. I guess his point was just that they were generally protesting how screwed up everything is and in that sense they are like the tea party? Hard to say.
