  • Wow. Just wow.

Evangelical Perry supporters said one thing that could be done to unseat Mr. Romney from his front-runner spot is to have surrogates plant doubt among Republican primary voters about the former Massachusetts governor's Mormonism, something that is widely thought to have contributed to his poor showing in the 2008 Republican primaries and caucuses.

"This is not a difficult task, but one that must be done," Mr. Brinson said. "You can't have people raising the Mormon issue front and center, but you can raise the question as surrogates about the language of faith that we used successfully against Romney in 2008 when we worked for Mike Huckabee. It is all about semantics."
I'm not surprised at the tactic at all, just shocked at how brazenly and openly he admits it.

      • Also interesting is the admission that it was a Huckabee campaign tactic. Not that we didn't know it already, but it's still interesting.

Great article, I think it paints a good picture of the SP experience for non-LDS folks. I'm sure the CB crowd can find some anti Mormon bias, what with it being a NY Times piece, but overall it casts Mitt in a very good light.

I can't believe Elder Nelson is 87. For some reason, he's still earmarked as one of the "young" ones in my mind.

What I wrote when I posted this article to my FB account:

"I'm posting this with some sadness because I admire the mind of Christopher Hitchens and he is dying, and this kind of bush league bigotry should be so far beneath him. One night about four years ago at Politics & Prose bookstore in NW DC he and I exchanged words on this very topic and at the end of the evening I told him he needs to get a new research assistant. He was spectacularly wrong - factually and ethically - in his comments then and he's evidently taken no trouble to correct them since. The man has either absorbed or invented some outright lies about Mormon practice and belief. And Slate - my favorite online publication - is just as culpable for allowing this slander to go into print. Sorry you're going out like this Hitch. Really am."

Adding insult to injury, Maureen Dowd quotes him (and Bill Maher - ) as if they were authorities on the subject, or as if their views mattered. It's a particularly mean-spirited piece.

I rarely use the term "bitch" to describe a woman, but it certainly fits Dowd. She's a bitter, hateful bitch who has yet to figure out that her life is miserable because of her choices. To hell with her.

                              • I had an interesting conversation with an admin in the break room today. She is a valiant Rick Perry defender and pretty much espouses every stereotype you could imagine from the Tea Party. Our conversation went pretty much like this:

Admin: so did you catch the debate last night

Me: No, I generally don't watch them but I did watch some clips on CNN

Admin: oh, Rick sure nailed it last night. He looked real good.

                                Me: ummm.....yeah

Admin: I can't believe that Romney guy touched him last night. Rick has some great composure because I would have slapped him.

Me: that would probably get me to watch

Admin: there's just something wrong with Romney. You that place he is from right?

                                Me: Michigan

Admin: no, where his daily is from.

                                Me: Massachusetts?

Admin: down south of the border?

Me: oh, the Mormon colonies in Mexico, yeah I heard he his grandpa or something like that is from there

Admin: yeah, they say there are a lot of people with the last name Romney down there, sounds like a lot of inbreeding.

Me: ummm....yeah (she has no idea I'm Mormon or probably forgot)

Admin: yeah, he's obviously got something messed up, he just sounds funny, must be some inbreeding.

At this point I just walk away afraid to remind her that I'm Mormon and that my wife's family has some loose ties (MJ's uncle is a business friend) to Mitt.
