Republicans should insist that only Mormons run for president.

Anyone watching the Republican debates, especially Tuesday night’s on the economy, can’t be missing the obvious. The two smartest, coolest, most independent and least ideological — this is to say, most presidential and electable — candidates are the two Mormons, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman.

Instead of wondering what’s up with Mormons, Americans should be asking: Whoa, what do they know that we don’t?
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

      She's patronizing you.

Anyway, Huntsman and Mitt are Mormons like I am.

It's refreshing to see you thinking tribally.

Holy crap that is funny! If that is the definition of 'Christian', then I am glad Mormons are not considered Christian. Group us in with the Catholics in that case.

No doubt about it. They are the same kind of Mormons you know.

You're using the words of a left wing dipshit as evidence?

                      • So Herman Cain is up in a couple polls over Mitt Romney? Why does Romney seem to have a ceiling of around 25%?

Herman Cain is someone that I feel has some decent political instincts, good intelligence and he has an optimistic and sunny disposition which goes a long way. The problem is he has no political experience. That 999 plan would get eaten alive in a national campaign. Half the country pays no federal tax and that 9% sales tax would put that to an end. BTW, I like the idea of a national sales tax for this exact reason -- it gets something out of the freeloaders and the people that operate under the radar (the criminal elements in the country that pay no taxes). But I'm not sure if it plays well in a national campaign.

I think Cain has much more staying power than Bachmann. He's simply more trustworthy and he's not crazy. I'm not sure if he has more staying power than Perry who's cratered to a less extent than Bachmann. The black civil rights charlatans are going after him big time and the media will do the job for Romney just like they handled Perry. I heard it mentioned in August that Perry may not be the savior that everyone was hoping for because he hadn't yet been vetted and hadn't been tested. That sure turned out to be true.

Romney is a difficult target for the Democrats. The best SNL can do is say that Romney is robotic and say fake cuss words like heck and fudge. You can't say he's dumb. You can't say that he scares the hell out of you. He doesn't have any crazy policy proposals. Romney projects a sense of control and command at these debates which I think puts people at ease with him. Mainstream GOPers think they have someone that can beat Obama and independents feel that they can trust him. He's a decent candidate to have this election cycle when it's all about having someone that projects competency when you have a sitting president which has shown that he may be out of his depth.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                            I really liked this:
I am an extremely lapsed Catholic who hasn't voluntarily attended Mass in more than 45 years. But what if I suddenly faced some personal crisis and I wanted to talk to someone for spiritual insight, guidance or consolation?

Whom would I be more comfortable with?

Would it be the bloviating little God-baiting parson in Dallas who is so quick to condemn, to judge, to exploit the worst ignorant fears in people?

Or would it be the octogenarian gentle man [Nelson], who may hold dogmatic beliefs I don't subscribe to, but nevertheless yearns to simply lead a meaningful life.

I think I would be on the next plane to Salt Lake City.
