  • Al Gore and "fertility management"

Al Gore has decided that one way to reduce pollution is for women to have fewer children.

What a controlling asshole, telling people what they should do.

I have a better idea, Al. Why don't you kill yourself? That way, you won't fly around the world in your polluting jet or drive your polluting cars or pollute the air with the coal that is used to power your large homes. If you're not willing to die for your cause, you really don't believe in it.

Considering all the hot air he puts out that isn't a bad idea.

I know you are brimming with hate, but I doubt Fox News could have done a worse hatchet job than you just did.

I'm just saying that if Al Gore really believes that humans are a root cause of climate change, why doesn't he off himself? If he's not willing to die for it, then he really doesn't believe it.

I'm not so sure why you have such a problem with me saying that. Am I wrong?

If you really believe that the afterlife is going to be better than this one, why don't you off yourself? I could come up with a ton of reasons, but that's because I'm willing to think about it for two seconds. It's really a shame you refuse to do the same.

The article you linked isn't even relevant to your ignorant rant. You just saw a headline and used it as an opportunity to spew some of the venom that fills your heart without even reading the article. In reality, he seems to be encouraging education and the empowerment of women, and your knee-jerk reaction to it just makes you seem primitive and sexist.

You need a bit of help with reading comprehension. Yes, the article was about encouraging education and empowering women, but for what reasons? Read it again.

And you telling me to off myself because I believe in an afterlife is an idiotic thing for you to say. I'm not telling anyone else they need to believe in the afterlife. But Gore is telling people how they should live. Huge difference.

ilpad, there's no doubt that Al Gore is a pompous, self-satisfied automaton, but in this case all he's saying is that everybody would be better off if women in third-world countries had the knowledge and means to control their own reproduction. He's not saying HE should get to decide who reproduces; he's saying those women and girls should be able to decide for themselves when and whether to start and stop bearing children.

My ex girlf is a pediatrician who did her residency in Children's National Medical in NE DC. Pretty much the entire story of her stay there was about Moms with many children by many men. She routinely had to give ignorant Moms talks on how bags of potato chips and McDonald's didn't constitute a satisfactory diet.

Al Gore is a pompous lightweight who I believe is more interested in perpetuating his climate-related celebrity than he is in solving problems - but my second-hand experience with FUBAR parenthood in our nation's capitol made me sympathetic to the case for managing reproduction among people who aren't capable of providing for and properly nurturing their kids.

Now obviously the scary thing is figuring out how that's done w/o giving the government undue authority in influencing reproductive freedom.

One of the things we could do about it is to change the technologies, to put out less of this pollution, to stabilize the population, and one of the principle ways of doing that is to empower and educate girls and women. You have to have ubiquitous availability of fertility management so women can choose how many children have, the spacing of the children.

You have to lift child survival rates so that parents feel comfortable having small families and most important -- you have to educate girls and empower women. And that's the most powerful leveraging factor, and when that happens, then the population begins to stabilize and societies begin to make better choices and more balanced choices
I find it is pretty interesting that Gore is all for pro-choice when it comes to abortion but when it comes to a woman's right to choose how many children to have he has a problem. What the hell happened to choice? Did the meaning change? Of course, the liberal's definition of word "choice" usually breaks down if a woman happens to choose to use their body as they will and become a prostitute, for example. How many liberals do you know that are pro-prostitution, other than when it comes to hiring one for themselves?

Also, it seems that he is saying that if a woman happens to choose to have more kids than he believes is the right number in his new world order then that woman is uneducated. Really?

All this coming from a man that has more than the average number of kids of his own, treats women as sex objects, and owns a large carbon footprint home on the beach of the rising ocean. His actions don't help his argument. Al Gore is still a dumbass.

seriously, guys, you are way off base on this one. He's saying that women SHOULD be able to choose how many kids to have. It's hard for us to wrap our heads around the idea of a world where there's no reliable way to control childbirth, but half of the female population lives in that world.

North Carolina thought it had a solution with its program of coercive sterilization but is now seems to be issuing an apology. Maybe they were actually just ahead of their time in Al Gore's new world order.

Perhaps my point would have been more clear had I included the usual disclaimers about how much I dislike Al Gore.

That being said, the little bit I know about rural African tribes suggests that the absolute best way to decrease poverty and starvation in these populations is the empowerment of women. Condoms and well installations don't fix anything, because the men don't want to use condoms and the wells just allow more time and energy to be used for making and raising babies. But as soon as the women receive some education and realize they can do more than push out babies, the quality of living of the whole population dramatically increases. The same is not true of the men being educated.

I guarantee that the relationship between women's education and general quality of life is the same in the US.

So Gore's point is an extremely good one. It's a shame that so many are too blinded by their partisanship to evaluate his arguments. Hey guys did you hear he claims he invented the internet? Hurrrrr.
