Yes, then you called it "rational" and "hardwired rationality" in the follow-up post. Perhaps you can imagine why I thought you meant "rational".Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostNo, that's not what I said. In fact, I referred to behavior such as Arnold's as "excessive rationality."

My friend Dennis' theory on women and their mates:
No matter how attractive a woman is, the dude that is banging her wishes he was banging someone else.
The corollary:
No matter how unattractive a woman is, there exists a dude out there that would be willing to bang her, given enough alcohol.

Irrationality is cognition, speaking, acting, and so on without the inclusion of rationality.Originally posted by creekster View PostI thought rational meant subject to reason or logic, as opposed to a primal biological imperative which is unaffected by logic or reason. Excessive rationality, per Max Weber, is rationality detrimentally manifested and can emerge in the forms of the zweckrational, wertrational, affectual, and traditional.
Infidelity of Arnold's sort, while in my view stupid, is not conducted without the inclusion of rationality. It is conducted with a rationality that is detrimental. It is conducted with an excessive rationality.
It seems we don't agree on a definition of rational.Last edited by Sleeping in EQ; 05-17-2011, 02:23 PM.We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

IOW, once you define what you say to mean what you want regardless of how it is usually defined, you are right! cool trick. I try to use it sometimes too, but usually I don't get away with it.Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostIrrationality is cognition, speaking, acting, and so on without the inclusion of rationality.

Isn't that just a ten-dollar way to say "irrational"?"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

My definition is common enough; Weber is legit in any number of fields--sociology, social-psychology, and communications being three that I know of.
That my definition doesn't match your definition doesn't have to contribute to meanness, does it? Isn't this where the Jesuits would insist we should go about exploring the values and limits of our definitions and only then come back to the current issue? We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

No, although I can understand why you might think so. Irrationality is the absence of the rational; excessive rationality is rationality exercised to one's own detriment.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

It is too bad Weber is dead. It would have been cool to get him post here so he could articulate his own ideas more clearly than what we are getting here today. I want to know more about zweckrationale and wertrationale.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Weber was, in his own way, an example of excessive rationality. You can always start reading him if you're genuinely interested.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostIt is too bad Weber is dead.
