  • The official 'Dons and Dirtbags' thread.

Dons and Douchebags is the game where you post two photos of public figures who have something in common, except by your estimation one is a Don -- someone doing great/interesting work that you respect, and the other is a Douchebag -- the opposite of a Don. The game gets interesting when it is difficult for people to guess who is the Don and who is the Douche.

Posters needn't explain their reasoning. A simple 'Whadda don/douche!' is all the justification you need to present, however you are welcome to justify your reasons in more depth if you like.

I will start of with an easy one. Who is the don and who is the douche?:

        M. Night is the Douche and Mel is the Don.

        M. Night has been exposed as a talent-less hack yet still overestimates his own product and still tries to use his name to promote the product.

Mel has had some enormous personal issues and he's insane but he's definitely a competent director and for all I know is working on something of worth right now.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Conservatives might be at a disadvantage on this one, but one definitely a Don and the other a Douche, so your answer is incorrect.

Michael Moore is the Douche and Franken is the Don.

Michael Moore, champion of the common man and unions, didn't use much union labor during the production of a his documentary on Capitalism. He regularly abuses his employees and supposedly doesn't offer them health insurance.

I can't say anything good about Franken, but he's not nearly as bad as Michael Moore.

                        Winning!

CMBF, you make some good points, but here was my thinking:

Don: Franken -- a comedian turned unlikely senator who has turned out to handle his elected office very professionally. You can disagree with his politics, but Franken knows his shit. He is a thoughtful, smart, articulate champion of his causes.

Douche: Moore -- while he tackles interesting projects, and his Bowling for Columbine was actually pretty good, even in that, his best film, the depths of his douchebaggery were apparent. Moore addresses serious topics in ways that either leave the audience dumber (his whole capitalism film), or that make HIM the subject at hand as opposed to the actual subject at hand. Simply put, Moore isn't very good at the very thing he is trying to do.

Franken did apologize to Mitch McConnell without any reservations. That was good. He also got caught doodling on a pad of paper during the Kagan confirmation hearings. Of course, that doesn't mean much to me. I have no opinion on the actual job that Franken has done as Senator.

                              This is a good one.

                              Bill Maher--Don, Bill O'Reilly--Douche.

I respect Bill Maher for how he treats the Muslim issue. He openly dislikes all religion, but he hasn't pulled any punches when talking about Islam which, I feel, is very important given how people on the left treat the Muslim issue with kidgloves out of some kind of sense of multicultural idealism. Multiculturalism shouldn't prevail over concerns of basic human rights and gender equality -- I think it should decidedly take a back seat (if not get out of the vehicle altogether).

On the other hand, Maher's use of the c-bomb to describe Sarah Palin was deplorable. But at least he offers something positive. I can't say the same thing particularly about Bill O'Reilly. Bill O'Reilly seems to pick and choose his battles and doesn't really provide a powerful voice for much of anything. When Bill Maher mentions that Islam and the Koran are dangerous, people listen.
