If I had the money, I would be that rando just to show how stupid the reasoning is by the USC. If something is important enough for the People to want to hamstring the legislature, then it should be by constitutional amendment. Otherwise, let the legislature do its job and put the resources into holding them accountable. Using a separate and distinct section of the constitution to make out of whole cloth a new Superstatute is a prime example of judicial overreach and as vacuous legal reasoning as one can find.
How is this ruling any different than the long sequence of rulings supporting the signature path to the primary issue I mentioned?

But that same stupid convention killed the one candidate (Bob Bennet) that the public (even if you only count republicans) overwhelmingly preferred.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

        • The judge drawn map is as ridiculous as the GOP legislature created map. I can't imagine this map stands long.

And the Utah legislature is egging it all on. I hope that no one knows where Judge Gibson lives.

There is no "Judge drawn map." There is a map submitted by the Plaintiffs and the maps submitted by the legislature. If the legislature hadn't overplayed its hand and ignored the law, they would have ended up with a compromise map. The legislature failed to submit anything that even came close to complying.

Thank you for the clarification. So do you see this as an iron clad judgment that will be binding for the midterm elections? What so you think about the arguments that the legislature cannot be "usurped" according to the state constitution? Cox's view.

Didn't the Lt. Gov say that they need have an official map in hand by January for candidates to come forward? So, while the repub legs will appeal it, time is running out. I don't see how this can be overturned at this point, but I'm new to all of this.

Quartering SL County between four districts was pretty bush league.

Yes that is bush league. You know what else is even more bush league, splitting Salt Lake City itself into multiple districts. I think they might have been able to get away with splitting up Salt Lake County, maybe even into 4 districts. But when you split up a city like they did, the intent is clear.

The whole push for gerrymandering reform is essentially dead now. Texas and California essentially ended it.

I wonder if this Utah proposition would pass if done today. There was enough ambiguity in how it was written when it was on the ballot 7 years ago. If this map stands, I expect a counter proposition in 2028... just when the GOP will be at its least popular in years.

                      • An interesting snapshot of where Utahns are right now. John Curtis the most popular politician in the state. Mike Lee still in the positive, but not by much.

                          • The things that the Utah legislature is attempting to do with the judiciary is just straight up evil. They are legit trying to remove the judiciaries check on the legislature and turn the entire judiciary into their yes man. It will create a super legislature.
