Escalating a trade war with Canada right now is one of the stupidest ideas imaginable so of course Trump is going to do it. Apparently talks broke down because at the last minute the US wanted to insert a provision that Canada would not pursue any new trade deals with other countries. What the hell? In Trump's deranged brain this probably goes back to his delusion of annexing them.

The way I understand it is that a last-minute provision required Canada to mirror the US's trade restrictions to other countries. So whatever the US would do to the EU, China, etc. Canada would be obliged to do the same.

The whole charade was extortion, pure and simple. We've all forgotten, but all these tariffs were essentially prohibited when Trump signed the USMCA in 2017. And this latest round isn't even the planned renegotiation of USMCA; that's in a couple of years. The US was looking for pain and to weaken Canada's position even further before the planned renewal.

The other non-starter was more political, dropping requirements for streaming services to share Canadian and French content. If it was the only reason they broke down it would be eye-rolling. But it is a big deal here. Allowing that to happen that would be political suicide for Carney's Quebec and left support.

Part of abandoning South Korea means losing access to early warning systems and valuable real time intelligence.

It can't really be overstated long-lasting the damage that has been to our foreign affairs and security alliances will be.

They may be beyond repair. Neither Vance nor Rubio merit any trust on the international stage
