I think I have you beat.

I'm worried of a copycat incident for someone that is in dire financial straights....knowing that LDS folks will donate to the family.

I think the financial help is great, but I can't help but have that sitting in the back of my mind.

That's not cynical that's paranoid. There is a difference and I'd much rather be paranoid than cynical (side note: a non-paralyzing amount of paranoia is what makes me a good engineer and keeps my contractor lawsuits to a minimum). Cynicism reflexively questions the stated motives of people doing a good thing. Paranoia worries (whether justified or not) about potential downstream effects. I think the worry is not unreasonable given the cultural rot throughout our society, but there are also potential offsetting downstream effects like people being genuinely touched by the gestures of forgiveness and overall animosity toward the Church decreasing thereby.

I think I also have too much cynicism in me but I am trying to improve. Given how I have changed over the past 10 years, I may never "fit in" at church like I used to. But I became a lot happier in my desire to remain all-in when I was able to switch my default to believing my fellow-members' stated intentions until proven otherwise, even when I don't quite understand them or they do things differently than I choose.

For about two seconds it popped into my jaded mind that maybe the shooter committed this act knowing that LDS folks would step up and help his family.

        Cynical indeed.

I briefly weighed that same thing in my head when I first looked at that fund. Does this incentivize bad behavior? I decided it is likely an unfounded concern. I doubt very much someone is willing to cross that threshold just to get their family taken care of.

This guy clearly didn't give a shit about his wife and kids. He has a special needs kid for crying out loud. He hated us more than he loved them. I have zero concerns about a copycat as a result of this.

I mean, this just reeks of "watch me turn my cheek so hard, bro!".
This is a terrible message to be sending. Now mass-shooters will be targeting Mormons because they know their families will be cared for by the Mormons afterwards!

Edit: Wow, I am so far behind on this take, I'm the 52nd person in this thread to suggest it.

Really stiff competition these days. I don’t think you would even crack the top five.

I read this just before going to bed and dismissed it. "He can't be talking about me..." But then I woke up still thinking about it and recognized that was my pride speaking. Yes, not only am I cynical, I'm proud! I'm jaded and I'm a work in progress.

I do admire funk's well adjusted thought processes. It's obvious life has softened his point a view. Glad to know him.

Haha. You wouldn’t even be on the list. Knock it off.

It’s a fine line between realist and cynic. Especially these days.

And if everyone really does hate you, are you still paranoid?
