It was heartfelt and sincere and I let him know I appreciated his words and friendship.

MJ has a Catholic friend that sent her $20 with a note that it is to be used to help rebuild the chapel in Michigan.

There are some really good people out there. I think it is very kind of her friend to contribute to that effort. Here is one thing that I certainly trust the LDS church on, it is going to take care of the members that were impacted by this tragedy. So whether that $20 just goes directly to the LDS church or directly to one of the families, it will be used to help people in Michigan.

    • A member of the church started a donation page for the family of the shooter.

      I love this response. Donated.

Goal of $100k and already raised $76K+. Damn. Is that because of an outpouring of love from the LDS community and those sympathetic to the message in the request?

But James teaches us that "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." The purpose of this GiveSendGo is to do that. Every donation will go to help provide for the Sanford family daily needs, provide for ongoing medical treatment, and create some stability in a time of heartbreak and upheaval.
My more cynical side wonders if all those "Mormons aren't Christians" people are more than happy to contribute to the family of the shooter.

$120k, with the new goal at $200k.

This is such a great thing to see.

I saw the first couple that were quoting from the BOM. Didn't realize I could scroll down through the others.

                    • This feels like a public attempt to purchase cachet and/or goodwill. I suspect most people are not donating out of concern for the shooter's family or because they sympathize with their loss. Rather, they are donating because of the image this creates for members of the Church vis-a-vis mainstream Christianity. We just can't shake our desperation to be accepted, and we're willing to spend our own money in hopes that it will convince others that we're Christians. That said, doing good things for the wrong reasons is better than doing the wrong thing or not doing anything. Ultimately, turning the other cheek is always a positive, so I'm glad it's happening.

Sorry, it's cynical, but I can't deny that's what comes to mind with this campaign. If that makes me the most cynical person on this board, I'm fine with that.

                        • You could have thrown in how horrible it is that a wealthy church sits back and let's their member's pony up when they have enough money to help all of these people. I have seen that response a few times on X already.

I had similar thoughts. I wonder how the Gofundme accounts for families for the victims compare.
