At the risk of cementing any assholiness on my part for the day, let me state that I feel sad about this tragedy, and still wonder why it was necessary to inject politics into that family statement. I wouldn't have raised an eyebrow had they stopped at 'please media, do not make this into a political argument'.

You're definitely not an a-hole. And talking about it on a message board does not make you one, nor does wondering why they decided to inject politics into their statement. Now if you brought this up to the family, that would make you an a-hole. And then you should get a tattoo around said a-hole, and have it filmed and uploaded to YouTube.

They ask the media to not politicize the killings, and then go right ahead and politicize it.

                Just gross.

                That statement is absolutely gross.

Apparently it’s been a strange day on twitter with people upset about the obituary written for the guy that killed his family. I guess the obituary focused on his good deeds in life and not the fact he was a murderer. Plenty of weird takes and many offensive takes being posted. But this one takes the cake:

I guess I didn’t realize the church had a gray area in terms of the evilness of violence and murder.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

People complaining about the church not making a statement are really dumb.

Also that obituary was completely tone deaf. Oh good, he loved to spend time with his family when he wasn't killing them.

The obit was pulled. You know, from the strange gun statement from the mother's family to the obituary praising the father, grief seems to hamper people's ability to act normally (rightly so). Or maybe we just really are a peculiar people.

Grief makes people do strange, atypical things. For example, I've listened to this song about 40 times in a row between last night and this morning. (NSFW: Language): https://open.spotify.com/track/6Xxsa...420fec67824b3e

Normally, I don't obsess over music like that, but this song is scratching whatever itch I need scratched. However, trying to put lipstick on the hog of a murder/suicide guy is kinda beyond the pale. You can't spin something like that; you can't look for the good in it. As Dwight Schr-ute said on Facebook, "It doesn't work like that."

I am not saying the obit was proper, but why do so many feel compelled to pile on during such a horrible time? Hey, let's trash that family and make them feel just a little bit worse.

And you are going to imply it could be their religion's fault? Good grief.

You know, if a few more of us trash the family on facebook, we can really teach these folks a lesson on how to behave in times like this.

I'm trying to highlight that both sides of the family did some weird things. It seems like a mass shooting will elicit such things. So apologies up front if any of the family frequents our site.

But the "peculiar people" thing was joke.

I'm not a gun person. I don't understand guns. I am wondering if someone who is a gun person can explain this to me? I don't for the life of me understand why you would be teaching a 5-year old how to fire guns.
