With all due respect for Rex Lee and the Law School from which he graduated, I'd argue that in this country, you need qualifications somewhat more extensive than a good pedigree.

The funny thing is, Bob Bennett is now going the tried and true incumbent route of saying "look at all of the bacon I'm bringing home" and I wouldn't be surprised if it works. A guy I used to work with, a smart enough guy, Columbia law grad, was early on the oust Bob Bennett bandwagon. His POV was that he was tired of all the deal-making going between established GOP members of the Senate/Congress and the democrats. (This is also the guy who told me of the Legend of Tri-Bob.)

I think what people from the outside have to understand is that the ideal that these "Oust Bennett" hold is to have someone like Tom Coburn in office. Bob Bennett probably is one of the most conservative members of the Senate, I'm sure he scores 100% on all the socially conservative issues. But Bennett is suffering from a backlash that developed its roots before the 2006 election when the GOP got its ass kicked. Most of this resentment isn't based on socially conservative issues, but with frustration regarding spending and fiscal conservatism issues. Although TARP really was a good idea, Bennett could be a victim of having voted for it.

I thought after posting it that I should have clarified. They're idiots if they vote for Lee over Bennett.

Even then I guess it isn't fair because it's the wacko delegates that are waging this war against common sense, not the average Utahn. I'd venture to say that in a full election Bennett could beat Lee.

Interesting. He clerked for Alito on the Supreme Court nine years after graduating from law school. Unheard of. Also, clerkship with Dee Benson of the District of Utah isn't exactly an established path to Supreme Court clerkship. See, there is an aristocracy in our country. (Alito worked for his father at the SG's office.)

Lee clerked for Alito when he was at the 3rd circuit before being nominated to the SC. Alito liked Lee so much, than he asked him to clerk for him when he became an SC Justice.

I'm not sure how that plays into your aristocracy theory. Maybe the deceased Rex Lee appeared to Alito in a vision telling him to choose his son?

Alito on the 3d circuit certainly was an established path to a Supreme Court clerkship, a highly coveted clerkship gig. But Benson was not a likely path to Alito and hence the Supreme Court. I don't mean to disparage anyone. Benson is a great judge--so I hear--and I'm sure Michael Lee is really smart and a great lawyer. It's just that there are certain established clerkship routes to an SC clerkship and Benson is not on that path. A fact of life, no more.

Are you suggesting that Alito's love for Michael Lee's father, from his days as Rex's bag carrier at the Solicitor General's office, had nothing to do with his selection of Michael Lee as a Supreme Court Justice Alito clerk about nine years after Michael graduated from BYU? I'm sure not even Michael would claim that (though I do suspect Michael was a star at BYU law, and BYU law has had disproportionate representation among SC clerks becaue of Rex).
