It seems he might be setting up his followers.

Again, maybe it's just the same old stuff, but this is also how cults get started.

Do you really think his listeners think it's just entertainment? Do you really think these people don't have a huge impact on the politics of our nation?

You sound like all the people in the Bay area a decade or so ago who were frantic about Ruch Limbaugh and his ditto heads. I think hes listenrs, for the most part, think it is just entertainment or, if they dont articualte that thought, they woudl still be unwilling to act on his advice unless it was easy and non-threatening to their lifestyles. Huge impact? naw, not really. You think they do?

Yes. I think these guys play a huge role in framing political debate in America. Some time back there was a study showing that these shows are largely how people get their news, and I think this has done much in the polarization of our politics.

Polarization in politics does not a cult make.

You used it first. Talk of a cult (remember, you used it forst) is over the top IMO.

Yours is what I see as a rather elitist attitude. Sure, loads of people get a lot or maybe even most of their news from Beck or Rush. But these people are not nearly as stupid as you might think. THey are listening, in many cases, not to learn what thye shoudl think, but becasue they are hearing what they already believe. You may disagree with then, and you may think they are wrong, but it is folly to conclude they are stupid and duped and on the verge of being blind cult followers.

I am speaking of the baroad policies here. In any given particualr, especially things like the Rockefeller center consiracy, etc., Beck's rantings ARE seen as entertainment by most or many, I eblieve. It is, as you specualte above, just more of the same.

Dude you're conflating two very different arguments. I also think toothbrushes and floss are both good for dental hygiene. That doesn't mean I think they're the same thing.

I don't respond to "elitist" ad hominems. That's an insult wielded by ignoramuses. Besides, your justifications have nothing to do with anything I've said.

LOL. You may be a great scientist but you havent studied poicital science if you think the use of the term elitist is an ad hominem attack. That is very amusing to me.

Look, I think I was spot on. You think I am an ignoramus. I am content to let the baord decide what they think. Happy posting!

By definition, it is ad hominem. It attacks the person instead of the argument. Note, however, that it's not the ad hominem that I care about, but the elitist as insult aspect of it. But I'm also happy to leave it.

Man, like me you just cant quit. It does not attack the person, it is the position you are taking. Look it up.

oh, an no insult was intended. I could do better than that if I wanted to insult you.,

I say that Glenn Beck is evil for claiming the authority of god as he spews his nonsense, noting that there are a great many people who believe what he says and he therefore has great power to shape political discourse. Creekster says that's an elitist viewpoint, because these people only believe what he says because his audience self-selects.

There's nothing elitist about it, as I'm not the one who introduced the idea that these people might be stupid or ignorant. Aside from that, Creekster's is an obvious point, as of course people are more likely to listen to what they agree with. I would simply point out that he has built a relationship of trust with these people, and they are therefore more likely to believe what he tells them beyond what they were likely to think anyway. It is my hope that his latest tactic would be too far beyond that threshold, however. It seems this is not the case.

Beck did not claim "authority of God". You do yourself no favors continuing to mischaracterize what he said. Beck was melodramatic in that 9 minute audio clip you provided. He is definitely prone to melodrama. But frankly, his melodrama pales in comparison to your hyperbole in this thread.

I think this might be ad hominey, but is impelled by genuine curiousity:

If you don't believe in God, why are you so offended that Glenn Beck is "claiming the authority of God?"
