I heard on the radio that everyone will be watching this release closely to see how well it does financially going the straight-to-vod route. Some speculate it might be the beginning of the end for theaters. I believe that theaters will be gone in ten years. Twenty years tops.

Nah. Too much money to be had. Also, I prefer the theatre.

I agree that some films will start doing a straight-to-vod or dual release. But viewing movies in theaters will still be in demand. And for plenty of movies the viewing experience will be better in the theater.

Come on, guys. Big flat panels and sound systems are getting dirt cheap. The increment in viewing experience at the theater is rapidly diminishing. I suppose it won't completely go away because there will be a handful of folks with a sentimental attachment to the old-timey movie theaters, but at the most it will become a small niche market. Like drive-in theaters.

Another factor in the demise of movie theaters is the rise of quality TV series. Will be tougher and tougher to justify big budget movies as time goes on. People enjoy a longer story with more thorough character and plot development.

I have not been impressed with the shallow product that typically comes out on the big screen.

Well, that's more reasonable but is a far cry from "gone". I'll be nice (it's Xmas eve afterall) and not breakout the emoticon of the guy riding backwards on a bicycle.

I think theaters will evolve but I doubt they'll be a niche market in ten years. Theaters have already evolved with stadium seating, Imax, 3D and whatnot. I wonder if people thought theaters would go away when TVs began popping up in homes. Maybe 71 can let us know what the thinking was back then.

I have a nice setup at my house- hd projector, sound system, the works. It's nice to watch stuff and play video games, but I think it would take the fun out of say- the new Star Wars if I could just d/l it on a certain day and watch it. I want that in IMAX or something, and I'll pay to see it that way. Maybe that's nostalgia talking, but I don't think so. I think it is more fun to see movies at the theatre where I can give the material the attention it deserves.
