Maybe part of this is that we have all been raised in a culture where executing people is common practice. It isn't that way in many countries. We are more similar to Russia and China than we are to Europe on this issue.

      Thanks. Good to know.

Then we would be no better than the criminals.

I sometimes see people hope that a convict gets raped in prison. That is truly sick.
      I'm not advocating that.

And it's certainly possible that I'm no better than the criminals. But if the victim had been my wife or child, I'm not sure if life in prison would be enough.

Utah to challenge decision overturning death row conviction

Maybe just let it go instead of wasting more tax payer money on this.

It is such a farce to us to kill people but try to do it in a societally acceptable way. Given the shortage of sedatives for execution, Alabama and a few other states are rearing to go on 'nitrogen asphyxiation', where someone is given a mask to breath pure nitrogen. This is without sedatives, so it will literally asphyxiate someone who is conscious. It's never been tried on humans, let alone regulated, but hey, at least they're not shooting or hanging them!

Kenneth Eugene Smith, convicted in a 1988 murder-for-hire plot, could become the first death row inmate put to death by nitrogen hypoxia in the U.S.

            Wouldn't CO be better?

Reminds me a discussion I had the other day about dogs which you wouldn't appreciate, so I won't summarize.

Accidental exposure to both have side effects. CO poisoning can give bad headaches, vomiting has been reported with nitrogen. I don't think we have a handle on what nitrogen would do when willfully administered, though no doubt there would be some point where some painful symptoms would occur. Not the main point though. They're trying to find a way to kill people that doesn't offend the populace's sensibilities. A gun squad would be more 'humane' than asphyxiation.

They over-complicate the hell out of this. I go in for a colonoscopy and they give me a shot, and I'm out for an hour and wake up in the blink of an eye like nothing happened. Just do the same thing for these prisoners we want to kill, but during that hour just shoot them in the head. They're not going to know. Easy-peasy.

My understanding is that they have a real time getting drugs that will do this because many companies won't sell drugs that are going to be used to kill people.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong here.

They should probably just funnel some of the fentanyl that they confiscate to use in executions.

                    .
This is my understanding. Most of the shortage is intentional from the pharmaceutical industry.

Yeah. We know how to kill a man good and dead, and quick. If you aren’t comfortable with using the tried and true method, then let’s stop pretending.

That's a good question. In Oregon, a physician prescribes a lethal dose of medicines like versed and muscle relaxants. They don't administer it themselves (euthanasia is still illegal everywhere in the US as far as I understand), but they prescribe the meds and the patient takes them.
