I assume one of the quotes to which you refer is the TSM quote. It wasn't very compelling, either way. Not sure of the other quote to which you refer. No one says that Buttars represents the Church, but he does represent Mormon political thought. I venture to guess that his opinion of gays is not much different than that of many of the brethern, but the brethern have the good sense not to be quoted publicly.

I have no evidence. Didn't know I needed any to state an opinion. Chris Buttars does not typify all those in the Church, but he does typify the attitudes of many Mormons in Utah. That's why he keeps getting elected. I just assume that if he represents the attitudes of many utah LDS, then he probably also represents the attitudes of some of the brethern. But I have no evidence.

It looks like this Elder Ballard quote in the press release is a combination of an interview he gave about Prop 8 and a snippet from a 1999 GC address by President Hinkley. I think it's appropriate that the quotes follow this gem on the page before:

I don't blame these guys for wanting to make this little smear piece, but presenting this as a factual documentary appears to be off base.

My hope is that the church doesn't address anything to do with this film. Just let the haters of the LDS church scream as loudly as they please, because this doesn't help the gay community's cause at all. Those who want to legalize same-sex marriage need to convince the populace why it's a good idea to do that, rather than point out why they feel the LDS church is hateful.

As polarizing as the gay marriage debate has been thus far, there are still plenty of people who are in the middle, due either to indifference or conflict. These will be swayed as opponents shrink away from exposure to ridicule.

My general view having known the guys who run money for the Church is that the vast majority of church assets should be paying taxes. The UK is already wising up to this and has started to selectively revoke tax exempt status of certain assets, particularly church real estate.

This has nothing to do, however, with my disgust over Prop 8; I think that no organization should be tax exempt.

I love the logic here.

1. My dad is a tax attorney.
2. We pay taxes.
3. I know the guys who run money for the church.

Therefore, the church should be paying taxes-- but only because nobody should be tax exempt (I'm looking at YOU, Red Cross!).

I guess the argument stands until we can find somebody who's dad is a tax attorney, who pays taxes, and who knows somebody in the church hierarchy who can trump this one.

You're probably correct. Too many in this world are too afraid to voice their own opinions out of rear of ridicule, so they either stay silent and do nothing or get bullied into doing what the loudest voices want them to do.
