This is an opportunity they haven’t seen in generations. So they nominate a transgendered grocery store cashier. lol. Brilliant.
I know the wife of Jonathan Swinton pretty well. We went to high school together and were in many of the same classes, including one seminary. They are a great couple and family. His wife is a great advocate for LGBT rights and she's also a very active Mormon. She bridges the gaps between the two very well. Jonathan is incredibly capable and smart and would have been a great senator.

All that being said, it doesn't surprise me that he lost. He's not ideological and also isn't extreme, which are two things the major parties love right now. He's pragmatic and compassionate while also being somewhat liberal on social and fiscal issues (he got excoriated for being not totally pro-choice). He's basically the type of democrat that a lot of Mormons could vote for.

The Dems deserve to lose this race. Not that Swinton would have won the general election, but he would have done better than an uneducated grocery store clerk.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

That code, man. We know what you mean.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
