  • I make a breakfast sandwich every morning. Toast an english muffin, microwave an egg and reheat a sausage patty. I feel better throughout the day having breakfast. At 330 calories, not a ton of calories to overcome.

I dropped 35 pounds or so during covid by counting and restricting calories. My blood pressure and cholesterol also came down. When I stopped doing both, my weight gradually came back. Seeing the scales on New Year's Day has motivated me to lose weight again. Plus I think I need the health benefits that will come from eating better.

When I got home from work yesterday, it was amazing how the cravings for snacks and junk food kicked in immediately. When my mind is set, there's no throwing me off track, but I probably need to retrain my mind with some of the muscle memory.

see for me, that's 330 cheap calories that are unhelpful. it doesn't help me feel better and it wouldn't decrease my appetite at all for later in the day. i would be just as hungry at 1 or 2pm or 3 or 4pm having had those 330 calories in the morning.

You can do the breakfast sandwich later in the day for lunch and you can consider it fewer calories then.

        • I have thought about trying to eat a 300 calorie breakfast to see if it has any effect on my appetite. After a 24 hour fast it is really easy for me to consume 1600 calories at once. I need to eat and remove myself from the kitchen to keep myself from continuing to eat. The same can happen for lunch as well, but it's much easier to control myself after 16 hours fasting than at 24 hours. I'm also trying to exercise and lift in the mornings. I usually have a protein shake and fruit after I exercise, which is about 400 calories. I'll just experiment to see what works best for keeping me away from excessive calories.

          • I had a headache all day yesterday. Mrs. Diddley thinks it was because I was going through sugar withdrawal. I guess that's possible. I normally eat so much sugar and garbage. Starting the fourth day counting and restricting calories, and I'm down 5+ pounds. IIRC, it comes off quickly at first, then tapers to a more gradual but steady loss.

During the first week after the holidays when I start to restrict calories again, I get insomnia.

              • Down 13 lbs in one month, including the holidays. Halfway to my initial goal already.

She has added a "jump to recipe" button on all recipes so you can skip the essays. Her videos are very well produced and I haven't come across a single dud recipe on her site. Her chicken shawarma recipe is a family favorite. You could eat for a year off of this one site alone.
Thanks again for this link. Tons of great recipes. We have made several already.

Her hummus recipe is good but seems like a lot of extra work. We have a simpler recipe that works equally well, but I will use some of her tips (like adding ice cubes to the creaminess).

Her baba ganoush recipe is great.

I was in Egypt a few months back and I loved the fresh pita bread for breakfast each day. We have been making the homemade pita recipe on her website. It is easy to make and very good. I cook them in my pizza oven.

I’m in. Starting this past Monday, no sugary snacks/desserts for the rest of January (one family birthday excluded). That should get me well on my way to dropping the 10-12 pounds that need to go. I’ll reassess at the end of the month.

Diet/nutrition/exercise/sleep/health have been on the back burner since at least August. A few things have resolved, or at least stabilized, and it’s time to get back in the saddle.

Congrats on your great results! The meditteranean Dish .com is great, and she loves to add an Egyptian flair to her recipes so if you're nostalgic for Egypt she's your girl. I love her homemade chicken shawarma recipe. It's a crowd pleaser. If you do it, I have one tweak that another cook taught me that makes it even better. Before you add the spices to the chicken, add them to a quarter cup of plain greek yogurt then coat the meat with the yogurt. It holds the spices on, and gives the meat a juiciness that is notably better.

Yesterday was a week in. I lost 9 pounds but need to get on the exercise as the curve is definitely getting shallower. Today was even less as I was down .2.

9 lbs a week is bonkers. I think the most I lost was 5 lbs a week during my most calorie restricted. A Dr I worked with told me that 5 lbs a week is probably too much and that losing weight that quickly will make my skin sag. But I don't think I was big enough to begin with for that to happen. I did look pretty awful for a couple of months after I hit my initial goal. Everyone kept asking me if I was sick.

I will definitely check out the shawarma recipe. Would go great with fresh pita. We have been stuffing the pita with chicken from Trader Joes along with cucumbers, etc. Pita Pit at home.
