  • Irons question:

I play with Titleist 695 CB's. About three years ago, I switched from Callaway X-12's to these. The idea was that even though my game wasn't quite up to par with the clubs, my game would improve faster as I would be forced to hit the sweet spot and get more feedback on each swing.

I love how the clubs look. And I love how they feel when I hit a great shot. But I think they're a little too difficult for me, and I might lose a few strokes per round because of it.

I average about bogey golf. I hit the ball long and high but struggle with consistency (chunking, hitting thin, snap hooks, shanks).

OK, so just like I do every year, I'm thinking about new clubs. I think I want to get some clubs that are easier to hit.

    I like these. http://www.mizunousa.com/golf/produc...800-golf-irons

I know the Callways, Pings, and Taylor Made's are more game improvement than these, but I'm thinking these are significant enough jump in game improvement than what I have that it will satisfy me.

    Any suggestions?

Golf clubs are like a pretty woman. The one that catches your eye, will inspire you to greater things. As golf is 50% mental, any club that you have confidence in will serve you well.

Regarding the Mizuno. That is a gorgeous club and is reminiscent of the Taylor Made R7 of 2008. Game improvement clubs with a low center of gravity are designed to pop the ball up and make it go straight. The Mizuno 800 is one of those clubs. Make sure the kick of the club matches your swing speed so your shots will start on target. Too stiff and they will trend right. Too soft and they will trend left.

I agree with all of this. I would only add that forged irons are generally for those with a good enough iron game that they need that extra split-second of contact between the club-face and the ball to help them shape the ball. If you're a bogey golfer, you're probably trying to hit as many straight iron shots as you can (if not, you should be). My suggestion would be to stick with a high-quality cast-iron club, as it will be much more forgiving on your mis-hits. As a result, you'll feel more confident with the clubs in your hand, and your swing will become more consistent. Once your swing is more consistent, you'll be ready to move up to forged irons.

        • Here's a funny little story.

My belly putter came today, and I love it. To keep it fresh, I wanted to get a head cover for it. 20 years ago I took an old ski mask and fashioned a head cover for my Ram Zebra. Still in use today. I decided I wanted to make a another custom cover for my new putter, and thought I'd mosey down to the local Goodwill store and see if I could find a good patch of leather to cut and stitch.

I found a pair of Black Cowboy boots, and the plan was to requisition the fancy stitched upper leather for the putter cover, but the boots were $29. I thought that would be too much money for this project, but the end results would have been beautiful.

Next I wandered over to the women's purses/handbags, and soon found a beautiful bag with very high quality tanned leather in ample supply. It was only $5.99 so I bought it. I got it home, and showed my wife and daughters and they started laughing, saying that it looked like a designer bag. Inside it said Lucien Piccard, and I did a Google search on the name. I found out the bag has it's own [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNPSzqZYSt8"]Lucien Piccard Leather Butterscotch Handbag - YouTube[/nomedia] video. Next I went on ebay and found a like bag with a buy it now price of $75. It must have been a $300+ bag brand new.

What do I do? Just because it was $6 to me, doesn't mean it's not a $75 bag. Do I destroy a $75 bag for a $50 putter, to make a $10 headcover?

          • Now this was fun.

While in St. George for the grandsons baseball tournament, I got an unusual round of golf in.

Saturday morning in the championship round we got beat. Son and grandson didn't want to go play golf, so I went over to Sunbrook at 3 P.M. to hit some balls. The Pointe was wide open and I asked if I could play that 9. There was only a 3some on the course and they let me through. Played it in 1 hour and shot 40.

Asked if there was another nine like that and he said Blackrock had only a single and a foursome on it. The single came back to play holes over and the foursome after my drive I want around. Played that nine in one hour and shot 85.

Eighteen holes of golf in two hours. Awesome.

85 is really bad for nine holes, but I'm glad you had fun!

LOL, I think you know what I meant to say. However, to be clear, I shot 45 on the second 9 for a 18 hole score of 85.

                • I took my Garmin Approach 1 out yesterday for a round and it was nice. It's a GPS unit you wear as a watch and it tells you distance to the front/middle/back of the green. It was fast and easy to use. I've also downloaded the GolfLogix app on my phone and it works but it takes a little more time and it's a pain to keep putting it in and taking it out of the bag but it's free.

81 yesterday. No Lagoon isn't open yet and it wasn't for 9 holes.

                    • Ended up purchasing the JPX 800's. I tested other clubs in the ultra game improvement category, like the Diablo Edge, but they're just too much of a drastic change from what I'm swinging.

I will have to check those out on equipment day.

It does show how much I follow this stuff. I googled to find out who makes the club. It's Mizuno and those are the make of irons I bought last year. I need to find out what model. I assume the 800's are new this year?

I think they were new last year. They're cast. I think they might be Mizuno's first cast iron. It's considered their first step into the game improvement category. Then they came out with the JPX 800 HD, which is new this year, I believe. Which is more like the super game improvement category and closer to the Ping, TM, Callaway offerings.

I am so curious now I am headed down to the car to see which clubs I have. I do love them as they have a good feel to them when the club head strikes the ball.

Edit: LOL, I do have the JPX800. They are great clubs. I had bought Mizuno's the year before, but I really loved the feel of these and the market was up big that day. I should never go near golf equipment on a day the market is up. I do have graphite shafts because I am told they are easier on the hands and arms for old people.

                            • Has anyone hit the new Nike clubs (Vsr or whatever they're called)? I hear they are the most forgiving club they've ever made. I have a chance to get them at wholesale cost and will pull the trigger pending good feedback. I'm currently hitting Taylormade Burner 2.0s.

Sweet. Good to hear they have your endorsement. My biggest fear is I'll take them out to hit, and I'll still suck.
