  • I bought some Brooks running shorts that have a zipper pocket for my phone and some elastic pockets that can hold water or food. I also bought a low-profile water bottle that should fit in there. These pockets are at the top of the back side.

I'll let you know if that ends up working. If not, I'll probably buy a waist pack.

    • I run every day with a flip belt. It is perfect for the phone and snacks. I have not found a good water system except for these bands.

I want a running vest for my attempt at a major trail run this summer, but haven't got one yet.

Those are similar to the Brooks Sherpa shorts that I wear. Love them. I have one model with the pocket in the back like those, and one that sits on the outside of my thigh. Super comfortable and the zipper pocket is the perfect size for my phone. Jiggle-free.

I bought a Deuter Traick running vest. Our local outdoor sports store had several different brands, but I like Deuter stuff and it was the most comfortable that I tried on.

I have a Nathan running belt that is similar to your flip belt. I like it quite a bit, but don't use it when I am wearing those Brooks Sherpa shorts.

          • I like the idea of a vest, but I wonder about ventilation and feeling sticky.

            • I've never had shorts with a pocket that held a phone as securely as I want. I've used a SPIbelt for a few years and it works well. I don't think I've tried the flip belt. Anyone tried both and can compare?

I haven't tired that. The flip belt holds things securely from my experience.

I've got both. Well, the Nathan version of the Flipbelt. I don't really like my SpiBelt. It is fine for a short run, but I got a ton of chafing from it on longer runs. Rubbed my low back raw. Messed up my tattoo as well.

                    • Conner Mantz looking strong, in second place with a few miles to go. Korir blew things up in the lead group about 10 minutes ago and opened up a 25 second gap. Clayton Young and Rory Linkletter in 9th and 10th at the moment.

                      • I made it close to the five miles on Saturday. My watch messed up, so I'm not sure exactly how far I did run. That's another discussion to have about watches. I have a cheap $30 Chinese watch, that I like infinitely better that my previous Apple watch, but it isn't great. One of the issues is that it keeps pausing the recording of the run data, and I'm not sure how or why it gets paused, but watch recommendations is another discussion I might want to have. Don't know if I want to invest in that for a single race. I can probably get by with what I have.

As far as form, I find the thing I encounter the most when running outside is dropping my head down. I catch myself constantly doing it and looking down in front of me.

My Brooks shorts worked great for carrying water and food. They were a little saggy at first, but I tightened the draw strings and things held well and it didn't bother or distract me at all.

It is super hard eating while running. Breathing hard and chewing was a challenge. I can't guarantee that everything stayed in my mouth. It will take some getting used to managing that. it made a big difference for energy though.

I have an appointment with my physical therapist on Wednesday. I've not had issues while I'm running really, but my back is bothering some not in the usual place, outside of my runs. We'll see what he has to say.

                        • I didn’t make it the 5 miles I was supposed to run today. I went to my physical therapist twice this week and my back has been hurting when I’m running since then. It wears me out quickly. My physical therapist warned me that there would be some different muscle pain. I’m hoping it goes away soon so I can get back on track. I made it about 3.2 miles before calling it quits. I did run another 0.7 miles on my way back home.

Looks like my back needs some more muscles. The ribs aren’t in the right place and need to get there. I have a bunch of stretches I’m supposed to do a couple is times a day. The muscles in my central back are super tight now. Hopefully I’m able to get my ribs in place and the muscles loosen up, so I don’t have any pain. If not, I’ll be abandoning the half marathon.

                            Good luck, man.

Your ribs aren't in the right place? What does that even mean??
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Bad posture, bad muscle development, injury, and other things have moved things out. The ribs are held in place by cartilage, so they can move slightly. When they are out of place slightly, they can irritate nerves where they connect to the spinal column or sternum or elsewhere.

I'm no anatomy expert, doctor, or physical therapist, so the explanation is pretty bad. Googling it, I have something like this: Slipping rib syndrome: Causes, treatment, and diagnosis

Edit: This seems pretty consistent with what the physical therapist has told me, including some of the stretches he is having me do.: Rib Out of Place? Safe Self-Adjustment Techniques
