I was up at Canyons/PC last week for Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Same report-as good as it gets.

Today, I have my first track practice, so I would like winter to start planning to go away.

    • I was hoping to get up to the Big Bear area this weekend to enjoy the eight feet of new snow over the last week, but it looks like they won’t have the roads open anytime soon.

I heard on the news last night that, if the snow and cooler temperatures continue, there is a chance Mammoth could stay open all year. I guess that happened back in the 80s.

We do have a spring break trip planned for Palisades Tahoe in a few weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing how that is.

There's a Colorado resort, A-Basin, that recently made it all the way to July 4. I thought THAT was wild. All year? Goodness.

The good days in Central Oregon are when Bachelor is still open into late June, so you can ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Then pond skimming and other late season activities finish off in July.

          • Sunday we continued trying to use days on our Mountain Collective pass with a day at SnowBasin. I like it as well as any other resort in Utah but it's just not as nice as Big Sky. My wife isn't a great skier and her goal is to try and not to get hurt it was the little lift all day for her. The difference between the LittleCat lift and the next level up is pretty huge and the LittleCat is about as easy as a beginner lift gets. My biggest beef with Utah resorts is all the short steep sections followed by an almost flat section and it goes like that all the way down the mountain. It was a beautiful day and crowded, so much for thinking Sunday may be just a little better than a Saturday.

              • Jackson Saturday and Targhee Sunday, beautiful weekend. I hadn't skied Teton Village in over forty years so I was really looking forward to it and it didn't disappoint. It's a huge mountain, you could take Bridger Gondola and everything north of it and still have a top ski resort without even including the Tram and everything that it opens up. It's definity a big boy hill, I only went up the tram once all day and that was plenty for me. I'm old enough that I love the groomers and just doing by best Ted Ligety impression of just big craving GS turns all day, I found plenty of that off of the Teton Lift and the Gondola. It was fun.

When the weather is good the views up at Targhee are unmatched by any other place I've every skied before. It warmed up enough Saturday that it had melted a little and then froze that night. The snow was solid but not icey, the fastest snow I'd ever skied on. You could fly. It started to soften up again about 1 but it was still great. The mountain was groomed and fast, I had a blast.

I love those two mountains. Teton Village (when there is snow) is the gold standard to me, and it's insane how Whistler-Blackcomb still dwarfs it.

I'd like to try Whistler someday, maybe hit Schweitzer Basin on the way up. I was looking at the trail map for Whistler and was a little surprised the base sits at 2400 feet and the top is at 7200, ton of vertical but just lower than I expected.

Yeah the snow is different than say a Targhee but it's fantastic all the same. When you stay up there you are just submerged in skiing. I usually can get my fill in a few days.

                      • Did my two days at Sun Valley this past weekend. They had the Warm Springs side shut down so they can tear down and upgrade two lifts on that side, that took away a bunch of the mountain but it was still good. The thing I like about Sun Valley is the constant slope from top to bottom, it's unmatched from anywhere else I've ever skied. Ketchum is a nice town and the weather was beautiful. One big plus for Sun Valley is it's just not an easy place to get to, it's not very crowded. It was a good weekend.

                            • I think I haven't been skiing in a couple years- time flies. I am going next week to Tamarack and Brundage even though the snow there is absolutely nonexistent right now. Oh well. They're supposed to get about a foot or so next week before I get there, so that ought to help some.

Yeah December sucked for snow, but January is suddenly looking up. I'm headed to Brighton Tues night after work, then hopefully taking my daughter out of school early to get her on skis for the first time later in the week. I might have to also put on skis for the first time in 25 years to accompany her after a lesson. Then annual cousins snowboard trip to Powder Mountain (which became a favorite of mine last year) end of January.
