It looks great, man. Mas fotos, por favor. Also, what's the plan with the overhead space in the old fridge area? Are you putting in a new corner cabinet as well? Shelves? Just curious.

I'd mount an undercabinet microwave there.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostIt looks great, man. Mas fotos, por favor. Also, what's the plan with the overhead space in the old fridge area? Are you putting in a new corner cabinet as well? Shelves? Just curious.

That's coming together quite nicely, whatshappeningman. Gas cooktops are nice. I'm not a huge fan of those glass cooktop deals.
I'm with kccougar. Keep the turquoise oven as a nod to 50s Americana. It will look very cool once the entire kitchen is updated. I guess the only problem is that the functionality is outdated, as well. For example, likely not convection and probably on the small side.
So walk us through the color scheme when you are done. Are you going to paint the walls? Backsplash for the wall? Doing anything with the floors? What color will the cabinets be when finished?
Very fun project.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

That's the plan. We almost bought a Samsung 1100 watt deal the other day, but we decided that it wasn't prudent to spend anymore money than we have to right now. We agreed to consider giving each other a microwave for Christmas. It'd be a perfect fit (the gap is 33").Originally posted by Surfah View PostI'd mount an undercabinet microwave there.
The oven doesn't cook very well. I plan to replace the element this summer to see if that will help. It burns a lot of stuff, and the temp above 400F is unknown, no matter what the dial says. No timer either. It's an odd size too, 26".Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostThat's coming together quite nicely, whatshappeningman. Gas cooktops are nice. My wife gets to pick the colors. She has compromised on so much (e.g. this house) that I said I'd go along with whatever she wanted save hot pink and chartreuse. The walls are going to be painted, unless she finds a wallpaper she likes, and that we can afford. I have a quote of $1200 to paint the entire kitchen, including cabinets, and removing the old paper. It's $800 just for the cabinets, and that's using Sherwin Williams paint. She's thinking of a pale yellow, maybe a tarragon green, or white cabinets. We're going to take some photographs and upload them into Sherwin Williams color scheme software.
As to the backsplash, there's an antique store called Thieves Market, and they have about 10,000 tin tiles they took down from an old building that was demolished. They are about 100 years old, and in rough shape, but with a scouring bit (wire brush) on a drill, I can make quick work of old paint and oxidation stains. They are $1 each and are embossed with a fleur de lis. Our time in NOLA left us with lots of fleur de lis stuff, so she's thinking of getting about 75 tin tiles, having me snip them to a uniform size, and then spray painting them an accent color for our backsplash on the wall behind the cooktop.
The floor was replaced last year with a $250 linoleum installed job. Before it was turquoise mosaic linoleum. The floor plan is to install wide-plank wood flooring on the diagonal, in about four years.
Eventually we're going to replace the junky metal shelf with another wall of cabinets, but Don Mac's got to teach 18 hours of overloads to afford that, and we want to get a tankless water heater next year before we add more to the kitchen.Last edited by wuapinmon; 04-29-2011, 11:32 PM."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. So, we had to raise the height of the cabinets because you couldn't fit a wooden spoon in a pot with the old hood height. It worked for three days, and now the fan won't work. Hopefully it's just a wiring issue, because I don't want the hassle of having to ship it back to ajmadison.com.

New window and trim from Lowe's. $390 installed. We decided to only have a screen on the bottom; great idea. I'm amazed at how much light a screen blocks.

The old light that was missing a dome has been replaced by this $20 job from Lowe's. It's very bright for being so tiny.

Pesky light switch that kept throwing the MAIN BREAKER no matter how I rewired it. Fixed now, but I had to call a professional who explained how it was wired, and I still don't understand.

When we redid our kitchen my wife bought some faux-tin tile sheets and cut them down to make her own backsplash when we put in new granite counters. I'll try to find a photo.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostAs to the backsplash, there's an antique store called Thieves Market, and they have about 10,000 tin tiles they took down from an old building that was demolished. Anyone know of good tool to pull out all those staples? There are hundreds of these damn things and it would be nice to be able to pull these things out a little bit easier."Be a philosopher. Can I pound the staples in and make them flush with the floor? If I do that is it really going to make a difference on my laminate flooring?Originally posted by Surfah View PostNeedle nose pliers, knee pads and a back brace."Be a philosopher. Yes. When laying laminate you have to be careful because you will feel every indentation or bump. Sweep that baby clean and vacuum it. I would pull them all even though that will be a big PITA.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostCan I pound the staples in and make them flush with the floor? Square mouth shovel. Skim the floor with it and the staples should come out.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostAnyone know of good tool to pull out all those staples? There are hundreds of these damn things and it would be nice to be able to pull these things out a little bit easier.

There is absolutely a tool for this. We bought a couple of the pry bars shown here:Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostAnyone know of good tool to pull out all those staples? and they worked beautifully. We had a couple of similar tools that had a smaller head also. Just go to Home Depot or somewhere and they will set you up. They don't cost much at and are far more effective than needle-nose pliers.
EDIT: Sorry, missed FN Phat's link. That is similar to the other two tools we had."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
