The actual section 89 text of the word of wisdom doesn't seem to matter much. The word of wisdom is no longer a word of wisdom but is now a commandment, and was declared as such along with an interpretation that it refers to coffee and tea. The decision to completely ignore everything in it except for the tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcohol prohibitions seems to have come later.

I must agree that given that the wow has been boiled down to 4 things, someone who drinks green tea is flagrantly violating 25% of the entire word of wisdom.

Since the only official position on this issue is coffee and tea, and since I don't care whether I drink various iterations of tea, I skip all tea and all coffee.

My point in posting is that whenever these discussions come up, there is always an inevitable debate between herbal and non-herbal.....and this distinction has no root in any Church policy or practice. All we know is "coffee and tea." Beyond that, it is anyone's guess. But "tea leaf this" or "herbal berry that" always puzzles me. Where are people getting this? Perhaps it is a remnant of seminary.

I have a friend from school who offered to run my campaign for prophet, so DDD better hope I don't win the election. My first conference address would look something like this...

We have some orders of business. First, this WoW thing worked much better as counsel rather than commandment, so we're going back to that. Second, who wants to be at church for three hours? Two hours it is. Third, the idea of fast & testimony once a month should have never made it beyond the cutting room. It will now be held quarterly. Last, please don't give in to DDD's demands for a re-vote. Magna is Utah's own Floridian-style 3rd world country, which means I won the election fair and square!

Green Tea = White Tea = Black Tea = Pekoe Tea = Oolong Tea = Darjeeling Tea = all the different varieties of Chai Tea = any tea made from the Camellia sinensis plant.

All made from the same plant, just prepared in a different way, and/or blended with different things when brewed.

These are NOT "herbal teas" - they are Sec-89-verboten-hot-drink-TEAS, all from the "tea plant"...

Fascinating how we got to this level of specificity from such a benign revelation.

You're the only one I've ever met, Mormon or non-Mormon, who is confused by this distinction. Lots of people don't get why we (some of us) drink caffeinated drinks, but everyone understands why tea is different from herbal tea.
