The actual section 89 text of the word of wisdom doesn't seem to matter much. The word of wisdom is no longer a word of wisdom but is now a commandment, and was declared as such along with an interpretation that it refers to coffee and tea. The decision to completely ignore everything in it except for the tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcohol prohibitions seems to have come later.

I must agree that given that the wow has been boiled down to 4 things, someone who drinks green tea is flagrantly violating 25% of the entire word of wisdom.

My point in posting is that whenever these discussions come up, there is always an inevitable debate between herbal and non-herbal.....and this distinction has no root in any Church policy or practice. All we know is "coffee and tea." Beyond that, it is anyone's guess. But "tea leaf this" or "herbal berry that" always puzzles me. Where are people getting this? Perhaps it is a remnant of seminary.
I definitely see your point and I also skip all tea mainly because I think it tastes like crap. I suppose it comes down to semantics and whether by tea they meant a drink made from a tea leaf or they meant the process of seeping various vegetation in hot water. I do think it is most logical that tea refers to drinks containing what has long been known as tea but that's just my opinion.

Which is fine. I can appreciate the distinction.

if I am ever elected to the office of Prophet, one of the first things I am going to do is state a clear policy on a few of these stupid vague items of controversy in our culture...

"Hey everyone...hello....hello....is this thing on? OK, so welcome to General Conference. These seats are pretty rad! The Laker game starts in a little bit, so let's cut to the chase.

First, caffeinated soda.....skip it. And by "skip it," I'm not suggesting, I am threatening.

Second, if you pay on net, then also pay on any tax refund you receive later. If you pay on gross, don't worry about the tax refund because you have already paid out. And parents, stop being lame and making your 9 year old kid tithe out the $5 bill grandma gives him on his birthday.

Third, missions are cool. You don't have to go if you don't want to go. Girls, stop being stuck up about dating guys that didn't go on missions. Guys, get over yourself...most of you are not good enough at your sport to go pro, so you you might as well go on a mission.

Fourth, we are officially releasing Julie Beck. All those in favor, say BOOYAH!

        *BOOYAH!*

Alright, let's have a closing prayer and get out of here!"

When is the election? Can I vote more than once? Although you will probably have to switch your allegiance to the true and living NBA team in SLC.

I need a good campaign manager.

How are you at making large banners/signs and holding them up for lots of people to see?

I have a friend from school who offered to run my campaign for prophet, so DDD better hope I don't win the election. My first conference address would look something like this...

We have some orders of business. First, this WoW thing worked much better as counsel rather than commandment, so we're going back to that. Second, who wants to be at church for three hours? Two hours it is. Third, the idea of fast & testimony once a month should have never made it beyond the cutting room. It will now be held quarterly. Last, please don't give in to DDD's demands for a re-vote. Magna is Utah's own Floridian-style 3rd world country, which means I won the election fair and square!

                Meeting adjourned.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

These are NOT "herbal teas" - they are Sec-89-verboten-hot-drink-TEAS, all from the "tea plant"...
Fascinating how we got to this level of specificity from such a benign revelation.

thank you! where do people get this stuff, and so authoritatively, at that?

also, why is "tea plant" in quotes?

I admit your platform is compelling, although it is mostly a retread of my campaign.

Let me say this.........if I am elected, I will also encourage people to drive discourteously and aggressively after they leave Conference!

You're the only one I've ever met, Mormon or non-Mormon, who is confused by this distinction. Lots of people don't get why we (some of us) drink caffeinated drinks, but everyone understands why tea is different from herbal tea.

Must be a remnant of early-morning seminary.

To close this 235th general conference, we will sing the great hymn of the church A Day in the Life, written by honorary apostle John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
