Is green tea against the word of wisdom? I hear some people say it is because it is a tea leaf, but I know we can drink herbal tea...
It's in weight loss pills, vitamins, energy drinks, almost everything!!! Someone said you couldn't drink it as a tea but that it was fine as a powder, which doesn't really make sense. Is this just one of the grey areas of the word of wisdom?

Take this for what it's worth....

Green Tea is the one tea that all Japanese members and missionaries can agree is against the WoW (including matcha, etc. in here). For the rest, good luck.

I answer "yes" when asked if I follow the WoW in the TR interview. I do not drink green tea. Or alcohol. Or coffee. Etc.

I do eat green tea ice cream (naturally or artificially flavored, it makes no difference). Ditto for coffee flavored ice cream. I use alcohol when I cook. My wife and I fight over the rum-and-espresso soaked ladyfingers in Tiramisu. I chew gum with green tea extract. I would also have it in vitamins, supplements, etc.

I would probably draw the line at a green tea like drink as produced by somebody like Sobe. If it is marketed as green tea, instead of just containing green tea extract or something, then I abstain.

I am well aware that mine is probably a liberal interpretation of the WoW. Basically, I don't worry too much about what's in stuff (from a WoW perspective) unless there is a smoking gun in the title.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

FWIW, if you are drinking anything with 'smoking gun' in the name of the drink, well, its pretty easy to say that you are breaking the WoW.

Green Tea...to be honest, I don't actively seek to drink it, but it doesn't bother me either when WoW questions come up. Costco sells their VitaWater and one of the included drinks in their case of them is Raspberry/Green Tea. I drink it and don't feel bad about it nor do I feel that I am violating the WoW.

FWIW, this is completely up to you. If, in a TR interview, when I ask the WoW question, somebody were to tell me they drink green tea, I would probably say something along the lines of "that's nice" and then repeat the question.

The fact that you wrote "grey" instead of "gray" makes me think that your British sensibilities will get you a special tea exemption. So my advice is to drink up.

The reason I asked is because I have these MonaVie energy drinks I really like. I drink them maybe once or twice a week in the morning before a workout. I gave one to my mom and she loved it, but then balked once she learned there was green tea extract in it. I said it was made in Utah and wouldn't have stuff in it Mormons wouldn't drink. Since then I have been curious though...I have also noticed how many things in my medicine cabinet contain green tea extract!

The lord has revealed to me that it is ok to drink green tea. I follow his advice.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

My sister sells MonaVie and she's the most orthodox Mormon on the planet. If she sells it, I'm sure it's kosher.

Yes it is against the WoW.

Green Tea = White Tea = Black Tea = Pekoe Tea = Oolong Tea = Darjeeling Tea = all the different varieties of Chai Tea = any tea made from the Camellia sinensis plant.

All made from the same plant, just prepared in a different way, and/or blended with different things when brewed.

These are NOT "herbal teas" - they are Sec-89-verboten-hot-drink-TEAS, all from the "tea plant"...

A young couple in my ward works for MonaVie. Like non seq's sister, the wife is about as orthodox mormon as they come and she loves the stuff.

I'm not arguing that green tea is verboten, but I've found that when it comes to matters of money, Mormons much more liberal in their interpretation of commandments.

Probably applies to people in general, not just Mormons.

                        Congratulations.

You have been promoted to "Raddest Person on the Earth." It is anticipated that you will serve in this capacity indefinitely.

Personally, I think Green Tea would be worth losing a temple recommend. I mean really, once you have received your own personal endowment, continued temple service is just that -- service. You can perform other kinds of service in lieu of temple service AND drink green tea. It seems like a huge win. Plus you won't get called to any calling that requires that you have a temple rec. Think about it... all of the nice things about being a Mormon with none of the boring things, plus you get to drink green tea, beer, Mike's Hard Lemonade, and coffee. Let the judgers judge, but I say, bottoms up!

No argument here. Either way, this comes down to people governing themselves on certain issues. If she feels okay about answering yes to the WoW question while drinking green tea, I have no problem with that.
