    Busted

Speaking of missionaries, my home teaching companion mentioned to me last Sunday that he and his father were stopping at the dairy queen on Saturday Night around 10:15pm and he sees the Elders from our ward ordering some ice cream.

He walks up behind them to screw around with them and says: "Geez Elders in my mission we had to be in the apartment by 9:30"... then he notices that the girl serving the ice cream is pretty cute and says "Oh nowww I see why you are here"

They gave him some nervous laughs and then left pretty quickly.

I wonder if their garments became color coded at that point.

I would have just responded and said, "In ours we don't have to be home and in bed until 10:30."

I hated when members did stuff like that. I thought it was obnoxious. I sure it was all in good fun though.

I remember hearing a missionary either drop the s bomb or the f bomb while looking at a pair of Jordans at a Copelands in the local mall while I was growing up. This was around 1990 and this was his reaction after seeing that a pair of basketball shoes cost $110.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

The one and only time I went out late on my mission was New Year's Eve 1998. The environment in the middle of the city (Fulda, Germany) was probably better than the apartment house where we lived. First, there was a beer vending machine right outside our door. Second, there was the alcoholic Russian who constantly played Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin who partook from the beer machine numerous times everyt day. Third, one of the drunks upstairs was blasting AC/DC Back in Black on repeat that evening. We decided what the hell, let's just walk into the middle of the city.

It was kind of cool. In Germany they have these fire crackers that are big in stature but low on explosive ability. As we were walking home, we saw two groups of guys chucking these dynamite sized firecrackers at each other and each group taking cover behind seperate groups of cars.

Unfortunately, we then saw a group of three drunk girls and one guy walking along and one of the girls was literally assaulting the guy. After the girl jumped on his back and started clawing at him, the guy kind of threw her off his back and the girl kept coming at him. The guy finally had enough and just cold-cocked the girl. We go over there and the girl is just laid out on the ground, though there was no physical sign on her face that she had been hit. The other two girls are screaming at the guy and the guy just walks away. Without any notice, the girl opens her eyes, doesn't even look at us or otherwise has any expression on her face, gets up and walks away.

That right there is the hilarious thing about missionary service in the LDS church. "Maybe you shouldn't have been out at the DQ at 10:15 flirting with the girls behind the counter." Does anyone honestly believe we need to snub in the 19 and 20 year old young men who are doing this? The whole thing of mission rules and the "bad" missionary actions are funny. I remember the look on my zone leader's face when he came over and found us watching March Madness on a TV I bought at a swap meet. You would have thought he had walked in on a gang bang or a drug cartel.

Don't worry, I'm not riled up. I just think it is one of the funniest societal oddities of the LDS culture.

If Sooner reads you equating a gang bang with a drug cartel he'll go nuts.

Well, one is legal and one isn't so I guess listing them together might not have been perfect. Then again, I wasn't equating them so much as contrasting two separate and distinct items with watching NCAA hoops on a purchased 13 inch television at 19 years old.
