Easy, girl. A counter troll is sometimes an effective weapon.

Give me one reason why a teenage girl needs her male teacher's cell phone number and vice versa. That goes for Sunday School, seminary (see Michael Pratt), school, etc. As a father of a 15 yo girl, that just seems really creepy. Teenage girls don't need adult male confidants.

          1. Some people only have cell phones - no land lines. When I taught Sunday School to 16 year-olds, my students had my phone number and an understanding that if they were out drinking or in a tight spot, they could always call me to get picked up - no questions asked or judgments passed (BTW, this never happened).

Look, we all agree that this is the kind of situation where a male teacher needs to tread extremely carefully and avoid any implication whatsoever of impropriety. But we also might agree that some kids are desperately looking for an adult to trust. When done correctly (as Robin suggested), mentoring can be a valuable experience.

Totally and completely violently disagree that you should give your cell phone # to a teenage girl and tell her if she's drunk at night you'll pick her up. Seriously what the hell are you thinking?

I just got back from running (and thinking) and intended to write just what Solon did above. We don't know the situation... these things are complex. Sometimes desperate children only have the guts to reach out for help once. Passing the baton to an empathetic, wise, and nonjudgmental woman may be the best option. If the girl is in danger it is probably a good idea to seek professional advice. These things can get dicey. To protect yourself from false accusation, do NOT spend anytime alone with the girl.

If this is a troll... it isn't a funny one.

I don't feel violent about it as Jay does, but the risk and liability you expose yourself to in these situations is far too great despite the best intentions.

It's just the appearance if nothing else. You don't want to put yourself at risk of false accusation.

The answer to this is simple. Bring your wife along for the pickup. Then the youth will know that she has two other adults that she can trust.

Faith, Little Robin and I all have separate cell phones, and no land line.

We must each decide how much effort to put into our own education.
