????? Every charity has operating costs and overhead, and I’ve made no comparisons.Originally posted by falafel View Post
The point I was making is that it doesn't exist solely to raise money to alleviate human suffering. It has real costs and real responsibilities to its members and the communities in which it operates, which cost real money. Channeling og here a bit, but you are making some silly comparisons here.

Pretty sure that’s what the rich young man said to Jesus.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post
I get the devotion thing and I have no qualms with the church asking for money as a sign of faith, no matter how rich it is. Most members don't mind donating their money to the church. But I would love for the church to separate the donation amount from exaltation.

TBMs see the 100 billion as a sign the church is true and practicing what it preaches. Those on the outside see it as a sign that the church is just another corporation that cares more about self survival than its stockholders/members. While those in the middle keep thinking WWJD.Originally posted by Green Monstah View Post
I'm not sure if that makes the 100 bill rainy day fund more or less defensible. I'm happy for many of the charitable things the church does, including deeply subsidizing higher education. But I think it can receive even greater dividends (and not the cash type) by making greater annual investments in alleviating human suffering."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

I wonder what it must feel like to think only one or two of those things could be true.Originally posted by Sullyute View Post

I don't mind the Church asking for it, but I do have a problem with the Church's prioritization of it. There are a dozen or so questions the Church asks to determine a member's worth, and one of those is about the amount of money they give to the Church. I don't get that. When my son turned 8, I was semi-active but still wanted to baptize him. My bishop told me I couldn't baptize him unless I was a full tithe payer. I asked him whether that was in the handbook, and I told him I would put my character up against anyone in the ward, including himself. I was pissed, so like a dick, I also told him that it felt like a shake-down. Eventually the situation settled, and he ultimately let me baptize my son, but that's when I went from semi-active to non-active. It's a hot issue for me.Originally posted by All-American View Post
You’re not going to like this response.
I sincerely believe that when church leaders urge members to pay tithing, budgets and financing operations are a secondary concern to the main point. Tithing is an emblem of devotion. The church would keep asking for it even if it had all the money in the world."The mind is not a boomerang. If you throw it too far it will not come back." ~ Tom McGuane

More like but not exactly like since Christ didn’t tell the young man to give his wealth to the church.Originally posted by All-American View Post
I take back what I said earlier. THIS is more like what the rich young man said.

Well if we want to nitpick the comparison, Jesus also told the rich man to give 100%, not 10%.Originally posted by Moliere View PostMore like but not exactly like since Christ didn’t tell the young man to give his wealth to the church.

Ok, my pigeonholing was rigid. So I will just say that personally I am embarrassed that my church doesn’t do more with their money to help the poor, but I am sure Jesus feels the same way about me.Originally posted by All-American View Post

An alternative nitpick or view came from a baptist preacher. He claimed that the request by Jesus that the rich young man sell all his possessions and give to the poor was preposterous to begin with. A person can no more gain salvation through selling all his possessions and giving to the poor than he could by obeying all the commandments. Neither are required for salvation since it is a free gift from Jesus - salvation by grace alone. Personally, I'm just glad that the rich young man went away sorrowful before thinking to ask: by selling everything, does that mean net or gross?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWell if we want to nitpick the comparison, Jesus also told the rich man to give 100%, not 10%.
