This thread starter isn't original but it's not unprofound. Sooner once launched a mammoth thread on CG saying people pick religions like they pick ice cream. I think that is basically correct, and I've said the same thing many times myself (sans the ice cream analogy). When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Ice cream is my greatest weakness; I am something of a connoisseur. It is not a subject on which you can mess with me. With that in mind, I note that I love many different flavors. Like most consumers of the wonderful stuff, I get a different flavor almost every time I have some. And yet I have been a Mormon -- only one "flavor" - all my life.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThis thread starter isn't original but it's not unprofound. In other words, your analogy sucks.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Also, ice cream in all its flavors was available to blacks prior to 1978.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostIce cream is my greatest weakness; I am something of a connoisseur. I went back to look up the thread, and I thought this exchange was funny:Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAlso, ice cream in all its flavors was available to blacks prior to 1978.
Me: People have faith that the Mormon Church is true because they like being Mormon. That's why it's a silly thing to lose one's faith over. It's not about whether JS was 100% legit, 90% legit, or 0% legit. Being Mormon instead of Methodist is like preferring chocolate ice cream to vanilla.
Nonsequitur: But if you suddenly found out that chocolate ice cream was made from dolphin shit and that it caused cancer, you might rethink your preferences. That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. Hitchens

This is why religion imposes penalties for dissent and independent thinking. If you were a "chocolate ice creamer" who is tempted to try vanilla, but threatened with the possibility of offending your entire family by trying vanilla, you might be less likely to branch out.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostIce cream is my greatest weakness; I am something of a connoisseur. I like the metaphor of religion as ice cream.
My flavor would be "chunky monkey."
SeattleUte's flavor would be "Rocky Road."Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

This board is like a new toy I'm still learning to play with. For those more experienced than I does every religious discussion morph into a "the church is true/homoracistphobic" (the last English class I took was the required one at BYU and my wife wrote all my papers for me, so forgive me for not following the rules of grammar or using actual words) discussion?Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThis thread starter isn't original but it's not unprofound.
