Were these reforms instituted by the BYU Police Dept. or the BYU HCO? The article goes on at length about a rogue cop and whether his activities were part of his job. The article ignores the real issue, which is the Honor Code Office's appetite for the kinds of intel that this rogue officer was feeding it. This Lt. Rhoades is indeed a piece of shit, but he's not a bigger a piece of shit than the zealots running the Honor Code Office. They're the ones that encouraged Lt. Rhoades to violate the rights of all those students. The HCO should be feeling most of the heat in this story, but it seems that BYU has neatly deflected the story to demonize the rogue cop rather than the rogue HCO.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostNone of this really strikes me as new. this is the real headline. the hco soliciting non-public information from cops regarding criminal proceedings in which it suspects students may be involved. more than a few examples of that going horribly wrong (e.g., insensitivity in the sex assault examples). but if this doesn’t kill the hco, nothing will.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

This was all news five years ago. Maybe you missed the story the first time. And then it was news again when the campus police was almost decertified. I’m not defending what the HCO and CP did. But this is not breaking news.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

what is news are the foia’d details about the extent of the problem and involvement of the honor code office and the office of the dean of students in singling out students who had publicly criticized byu or the honor code, including those who’d been the victims of sex crimes. it’s a horrible look and more evidence of the fact that all non-academic issues of morality should be handled ecclesiastically.Originally posted by Green Monstah View Post

I am with GM here. There isn't much new in this report. We knew all along that the rogue cop was giving intel to someone in the HCO. Well, now we know who it was and some of the details about what was passed.
The HCO was torn down and rebuilt. They hired a new guy to run the office with zero ties to the old office. He has a PhD in the field and years of experience working at other universities in academic integrity offices. He was given a mandate to change the culture and the manner of operations. And of course, police department went through a similar overhaul. If you read one of the other articles in the Trib last week you will see that the guy from the state that tried to decertify BYU's police department visited campus recently and said he is happy with the new setup/rules/policies etc. He also admitted that dropping the department would have put a huge burden on Provo City because they would have had to take on a huge new set of duties with zero additional funding.
This has been in place since 2016.Originally posted by old_gregg View Postit’s a horrible look and more evidence of the fact that all non-academic issues of morality should be handled ecclesiastically.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Rexburg PD still reports violation to the college HC office. Sometimes I think the only thing that's changed over the years up here is the name and no sports.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI am with GM here. There isn't much new in this report. I know of at least one case years ago where the pregnant student dropped out, but there were no additional repercussions. She later got married and went back to finish her degree. BYU didn't make a big deal out of any of it.Originally posted by Lost Student View PostAre you saying that where a student gets pregnant, there's no honor code/academic repercussions?

Don't know if this belongs in this thread, but here we go.
What is going on here? What is the context?
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

They certainly seem nutty. So this isn't a widespread phenomenon?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
