Tangentially related to the topic at hand.
My BYU singles' ward bishop was notorious for giving a very in-depth, frank, and graphic talk about marital relations to all couples in the ward who were about to get hitched. As best we figured at the time, his goal was to:
1. Make sure that the attitude referenced above was discouraged and that we would have a healthy attitude of sex as fun
2. Ensure that there were no repressed couples who were not sure of what went where, in many different combinations
Granted that this was a bunch of late-80s/early-90s Mormon virgins, but the general attitude coming out of the meeting was that it was WAY more detail than was expected or wanted.
So as I got engaged, I was full of both curiosity and dread. Curiosity because I was as innocent and randy as the typical BYU returned missionary. Dread because I happened to get engaged to the bishop's 19 year old niece.
As it turned out, we never got the talk. I guess his desire to ensure his flock had healthy sex lives was outweighed by the ickiness factor of telling his niece "These are the techniques that Uncle Phil uses when Aunt Cheryl really wants it bad"

And you will have some BYU fans continuing to scream it is religious bigotry that is keeping them out. It isn't bigotry to choose not to associate with an institution that you believe is actively discriminating against people based on sexual orientation. It just isn't.Originally posted by Flystripper View Post

It isn't, but at the same time, there aren't ANY religious institutions in the PAC. That should tell you something.Originally posted by MartyFunkhouser View Post

The timing of this talk is disappointing as I looked forward to the illusion of a conference invite to the Big 12 leftovers. But now I don't even get the pleasure of believing an invite might be on the way.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostWe can circle back to this talk when BYU is left out of the next NCAA Football conference realignment discussion. I kind of chuckled when I read this. Most folks know that most of West Point is built with gray granite from the area and that the color gray is deeply part of the institution. Well, there is one academic building on post that is not gray- and that building houses the Departments of English and Social Sciences. For years West Point was a pure engineering school and not until relatively recently could cadets major in any humanities discipline. Historically, the academic department with the most clout is the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. I always felt they never really felt the changes to the Academy academic program were needed. One former DCME professor, a fellow named GEN Norman Schwarzkopf, was delivering a lecture in May 1991 to the US Corps of Cadets when he mentioned when he was a cadet: "there were a bunch of pinko commie professors in the Department of Social Sciences talking about some place called Vietnam." From that day forward I always believed not giving the Departments of English and Social Sciences a gray building was a way of letting them know that they were not really permanent and that for their own self-survival they should behave and support the orthodoxy. Jeff is our own Storm'n Norman Schwarzkopf warning the pinko commies to follow the Prophet. Other than that we should all agree that Academies are far superior in educating and training undergraduates than universities!Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYeah, I think he could have made his point without publicly calling out the commencement speaker. That speech was pre-approved by the college, so I guess he was effectively putting the college on blast.
I am guessing that this incident from June played a big role in forming Holland's motivation for the talk:

I am sure the brethren don't appreciate being lectured on how to do their job by BYU faculty in the pages of the SL Trib.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.
