Edit: I had graduate assistantship in the department of Academic Advisement/Graduation/Admissions and worked on a project projecting increases in applications to BYU and the associated admission rates. At the time, certain BYU administrators were concerned about BYU admission rates dropping into the 70% range.
BYU admissions are weird and the acceptance rates are deceiving. There is a lot of self-selection going on prior to application and for those that apply, BYU is typically their top choice. BYU is #1 in the nation in the number of students who enroll after being accepted (there is a name for that but I can't remember it).

When I applied (1979), several of my friends didn't apply because they were either worried about not getting accepted or they wanted a less competitive academic environment.

That being said, Elder Rasband must have had some crappy grades! Thank goodness he had a fall-back option.

      Yield.

BYU was my fall-back option. MIT didn't accept me.

Not really, I know what my mother's grades were. 90% acceptance rate is basically open enrollment.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Just as I suspected, but was a decade off. Things didn't get hard until around the early 90s.

                  lol.

Yeah, right. Things went from 87% acceptance (open enrollment!) in 1969 to 78% in 2005.

The drop off has been in the past five years and continuing: 69% in 2009 to 47% in 2014. I wonder how many future apostles are not being accepted by BYU.

Sure, but the acceptance percentage never has been a good indicator of difficulty of acceptance. Look at the average ACT and GPA scores in 2005.

Hard to say... do they also publish what percentage of applications are from Utah residents?

It was 70% in 1990. It was 88% in 1969. It was below 50% when Rasband gave that commencement speech. Unless he was a total idiot in high school, I find it hard to believe he couldn't get in in 1969. He was trying to ingratiate himself to the crowd.

I guess you're also throwing out your previous argument that people self-select themselves.

People started self-selecting when they knew there was no way in hell they were going to get into BYU and BYU didn't have a reputation of being a particularly hard school to get into until sometime in the late 80s.

One brother applied in 1986, another in 1988. My sister applied in 1992. I applied in 1995. The ACT and GPA expectations increased in that period of time.

It's late 80's now, is it? How are you determining this? It sure isn't due to acceptance rates.

Dude, leave him alone... he's making me feel better about my late-80s acceptance into BYU.
