I can tell you why it came up in my ward. It's because I'm the GD teacher and I wanted people to think about what the WOW is and what it isn't. Beyond the worthiness benchmark of abstinence from coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol and drugs, many people in the church don't give too much thought to the WOW and if they do it unfortunately involves the discussion of caffeine.

I hadn't planned on discussing it for more than about five minutes or so but so many hands went up I couldn't contain it without being rude and cutting people out of the discussion. Part of that is my teaching style, I don't present information, I ask questions to elicit responses and that can take more time sometimes, but that day people who normally don't participate were raising their hands multiple times. We talked about the origins of the idea and we read the church's official statement on the topic.

Ironically, there's more controversy in our consumption of meat with respect to the WOW than there is with caffeinated drinks, which is why I was disappointed on my class's fixation with caffeine.

For the record, I don't live in Utah and a healthy portion of my class are converts of 10-20 years.

How many people asking questions and commenting on the issue of caffeinated drinks were overweight? Shouldn't they have little voice inside their heads that tells them not to worry about those things. I would take it a step further and say that if you have two asses, you shouldn't be railing on behaviors that are more clearly against the WoW than coke, like alcohol and coffee consumption.

For me, the caffeine thing becomes an issue when it's an addiction. I drink caffeinated drinks sometimes, but if it reaches the point that you can't live without your 64 oz. Coke every morning, you may want to look at that.

The same argument could be made for anything that's proscribed by current Church policy about the WOW. Coffee, tea, beer. You could have them sometimes, but when they become an addiction.....

That argument doesn't hold up. I drink caffeine.

Tex is implying that the data demonstrates the average CUF user unworthy to be called as Bishop. More likely, the data correlates with the fact that 90+% of CUF users are under 40.

Well, I'll just make an observation not intended to attack anyone: There does seem to be a tendency among quite a few posters here to express suspicion or cynicism towards bishops and bishopric members, or to make fun of them. Tex might be saying that if more here had served in bishoprics, there might be less of a tendency to be critical. It's a knowledge and experience gap he's probably talking about, not a personal attack.

I don't see that much of an anti-bishop bias personally. Eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Looking at the data, it looks like about 30% here have served in a bishopric. Given the spread of ages of the posters here, that seems like a pretty high number to me. Would you disagree with that?

I assume women and nonmembers also voted in the poll, so it's not a low percentage.
