Good points. It is not a pointless discussion, I agree. I do think it should be a very short one, however. It is simply not the Church's position that caffeine violates the WoW, so I don't see the point of a long discussion.

My larger point (and a sincere one) was that those discussions just don't happen in my ward, and I really wonder why. It's a large ward with a broad demographic, in terms of education, socioeconomic status, length of time in the church, etc. Maybe the caffeine controversy is something that happens in Utah, or where there are large concentrations of long-time members, like certain parts of Orange County, CA?

I can tell you why it came up in my ward. It's because I'm the GD teacher and I wanted people to think about what the WOW is and what it isn't. Beyond the worthiness benchmark of abstinence from coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol and drugs, many people in the church don't give too much thought to the WOW and if they do it unfortunately involves the discussion of caffeine.

I hadn't planned on discussing it for more than about five minutes or so but so many hands went up I couldn't contain it without being rude and cutting people out of the discussion. Part of that is my teaching style, I don't present information, I ask questions to elicit responses and that can take more time sometimes, but that day people who normally don't participate were raising their hands multiple times. We talked about the origins of the idea and we read the church's official statement on the topic.

Ironically, there's more controversy in our consumption of meat with respect to the WOW than there is with caffeinated drinks, which is why I was disappointed on my class's fixation with caffeine.

For the record, I don't live in Utah and a healthy portion of my class are converts of 10-20 years.

Teachers who merely lecture are generally terrible.

I have experienced a few lectures that were very good, but for the most part, getting feedback is vital to a good lesson.

I was told by a Stake President that I wasn't compassionate enough to be a Bishop. I've tried to show my lack of compassion ever since. So far it has worked. I've never been a Bishop.

I was just trying to help elucidate TD's GD post for you. He's still working on some kind of emoticon he's going to use to tell people that they just missed a joke. (Although honestly, I figure if his jokes were any good, people would catch them the first time around.)
