Actually I'm one of very few sane people on this board.

Religion views human beings as raw material who are exploited because of their inherent fear of death. Redemption is offered in exchange for 10% of your income and surrendering your brain at the door. Why else does Elder Oaks lament the decline in Mormon family size?

To quote Chris Hitchens: "Religion makes intelligent people do stupid things. Handed a small baby for the first time, is your first reaction to say--'Beautiful. Almost perfect. Now please hand me a sharp stone so that I may do the work of the Lord!' In the ordinary moral universe, the good will do the best they can and the bad will do the worst they can. But if you want to make good people do evil things, you'll need religion."

Consider the millions who have died from AIDS because of religion's refusal to promote condom use.

Consider the institutionalized discrimination promoted by our own religion against blacks, women, and gays.

And all of it is based on supernatural beliefs without one shred of evidence.

Lebowski might counter by saying that religious people are happier or talking about good side-effects of religion. Is that what the debate has been reduced to? Once everything is proven false, you're reduced to: "You may not think much of Joseph Smith, but you should see our missionaries doing service in Peru!" Well you don't need to invoke God to do service or to be happy. One poll says Utah is one of the happiest states while another says Utah has the biggest depression problem. It takes more than a little poorly done social science to convince me.

I will say that I'm grateful Mormonism taught me to avoid certain vices (e.g., smoking, alcohol). And I enjoyed interacting with my neighbors, which Mormonism forced me to do. That's about it.

I will say you were sane enough to not bet me the $100.

This post is a perfect example of why I usually don't even bother to engage you. Given how you have defined terms and limited the engagement, there is no possible way you could be wrong. So what's the point? You're just as religious as any of us here, and you know it. We all define our terms and find out that we are right and live our lives the best we can. That's all you're doing, it's just that your terms seem to include showing up here from time to time (and maybe elsewhere) and making inane comments seemingly calculated to do little more than vex and annoy. Maybe you should go do service in Peru instead.

When I had a son it was actually my doctor who recommended this, so I group the mdical profession right there with religion.

I remember when Robin would call circumcision something equivalent to child abuse. He wouldn't change his tune even after being shown scientific evidence that circumcision has some really good medical benefits.

Seems like a distinction without difference. iirc, his thought was to "shepherd" his son through early stages of drug use.

I think we have a Gold Seal Certified Transmission shop here in town, but I've never driven an HIV.
