      I guess you have DVR.

I sound way more adamant than I intend. For me, this talk of personal journeys, the quests for truth, the yearning to share every minute detail of faith via facebook and podcast and etc. is way too self-centered. Everyone is selling something, whether it's a church selling salvation or a dissenter selling "a personal narrative of journey and hope." Barf.

Just keep your family happy (whether it means going to church, or avoiding all churches). Show up once in awhile to help someone move into the neighborhood. Buy the overpriced girl scout cookies & clean up after your dog. Who gives a rat's butt about "truth" and salvation in the eternities? All we have for sure is the here and now. Better make it count.
Yet another reason I seek out Solon posts in even the most dark corners of the inter webs.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

On a lot of levels, reincarnation makes a lot more sense in the context of eternal progression in the gospel than the earth-life-is-a-knot-on-a-string idea.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Without identifying you or the other Wilberg naysayers, I passed along some of the negative comments to my SIL who has degrees in music performance and pedagogy, teaches music and directs a large, regional choir. She responded with the following:

I agree with the thought…I was chuckling as they got to their “Amen” at the end of the one of the pieces on Sunday. I was hoping for some harmony right at the end AFTER the big unison verse. And then I was hoping the “amen” would be in harmony, but…nope! [My daughter] said when she was a music major at BYU, it was very popular to “dis” Mack Wilberg arrangements, and say how predictable they were. But…not all of his arrangements are so forumulaic. The arrangement that they did of I Believe in Christ is one that we have done a lot in the Chorale, and I absolutely LOVE it, and even though I’ve performed it over and over, it still brought tears to my eyes. Or Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing…same thing. And you can’t argue with his ability to take a truly AWFUL hymn, the kind I HATE and would never pick to sing in Sacrament meeting and make it into a thing of beauty. He does that over and over again. You can’t really say that he’s any different than, say, Mozart. Mozart wrote Sonatas in Sonata Allegro form…they had a format to follow, and he generally followed it exactly. In fact, the 3rd movement of 2 of his Sonatas are practically identical, but in different keys! What’s THAT about??? He’s pumping out lots of music. Are these people that are criticizing him doing as well as he is? Are they publishing large quantities of music? Are they well known in the SECULAR world like Mack is? [So THERE, people!] Like his arrangement of Cindy, for double choir and piano 4-hands. I’ve played that with the choir at ________College, with the _________ Repertory Singers, etc. People outside of our little LDS world know Mack Wilberg. So he must be doing something right...

I think that the “brethren” have asked that not all of the music they sing for conference be intricate. They want our ward choirs to do stuff we can handle, that brings the spirit, and they want the Mo Tab to set the example. So I understand that people feel that some of his stuff is predictable, but I am still in awe…especially with how he can turn a truly crappy hymn like “Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words” or “Secret Prayer”, etc., into a thing of beauty

Not saying I agree with her (esp. not her "he's like Mozart" observation), but thought I'd provide a more mixed review.

I thought the Mozart thing was entertaining, too.

Yes. Posthumously. Even if he is still alive.

The choir is for the sake of God. Well put.
