  • First Presidency Statement on Gendered Priesthood and Apostacy

Just in case there are any questions about stuff that is being handled down at the local level by bishops and SPs the Office of the First Presidency makes a press release...

    June 28, 2014

In God's plan for the happiness and eternal progression of His children, the blessings of His priesthood are equally available to men and women. Only men are ordained to serve in priesthood offices. All service in the Church has equal merit in the eyes of God. We express profound gratitude for the millions of Latter-day Saint women and men who willingly and effectively serve God and His children. Because of their faith and service, they have discovered that the Church is a place of spiritual nourishment and growth.

We understand that from time to time Church members will have questions about Church doctrine, history, or practice. Members are always free to ask such questions and earnestly seek greater understanding. We feel special concern, however, for members who distance themselves from Church doctrine or practice and, by advocacy, encourage others to follow them.

Simply asking questions has never constituted apostasy. Apostasy is repeatedly acting in clear, open, and deliberate public opposition to the Church or its faithful leaders, or persisting, after receiving counsel, in teaching false doctrine.

So whatever happened to that BYU professor that was teaching all that false doctrine about the blacks and the priesthood? Did his bishop/SP excommunicate him too?

I find the qualifier "faithful" modifying "leaders" to be very interesting.

As do I. I also am disappointed that there is no mention of having taken the issue to the Lord.

I've never heard it referred to in that way. Must be a new revelation.

I'm curious as to what they mean by Church practice. I assume this has been included to allow space for the gender inequalities in the Church to not be doctrinally based while still supporting the decision to excommunicate people who question these ideas.

I wondered about that too. Does this mean if we start a group touting the appropriateness of having CocaCola, Dr Pepper and Mtn Dew at ward sponsored activities, we could be ex'd?

You just need a better ward. We always have leaded soda at all ward functions.

What in the hell is Church practice? How can that even be official if not rooted in doctrine. How can it be apostasy to oppose a practice?

I dislike their misuse of apostasy when they mean heresy.

Not only my current ward. I can honestly say I've never seen Mtn Dew at any Ward sponsored activity I've been a part of. Therefore, I would technically be opposing church practice, at least in my own experience, and hence the problem with including the term Church practice in the first place.

Council of the first presidency means that only Eyring and Uchtdorf could sign off since Monson no longer has his wits about him.

Semantics, my friend. This comes from the "council of the 1st presidency and Qo12"!

It's revelation! My facebook feed tells me that it's true....and tells me that....it's true.
