  • I think The Church responds less to outside pressure and more to external and internal events/developments that force its hand. OW is a fly speck when compared to the huge influx of women serving full-time proselyting missions for The Church.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

    • With all the discussion about how Kate Kelly went about things the wrong way and might be "setting us back," I thought it might be useful to consider what we can learn from history.

Here is a nice newspaper article from 1977 about two Mormon men who were excommunicated for their open defiance to the Church's policy. One of them got in big trouble for ordaining a black man to the priesthood. That was a big No-No in 1977.

Even more impressive is that one of them was employed by the Church and lost his job over it. Talk about a man of principle. "You think black men should be treated equally?? Well you're fired!"

      • That article is very blurry and I can't read it. I'm going to assume that your quote about being fired actually appears in the article somewhere.

You should click on the link. Pretty amazing stuff there. You can get a riding lawn mower for $599 or see the dates and times for Holiday on Ice at the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium.

So I read on. 500 people is a mass resignation?? LOL

I will bet I could get more than 500 to resign over the HC if I tried hard enough.

Besides, after the 500 leave, who is left in the church to care about poor Kate?

Maybe some of them will show up here to take over for Sooner and SU.

I guess 100 showed up. Perhaps the other 400 were intimidated in some way. Is 100 still considered a mass resignation?

One lady said she hadn't gone to church in 10 years, but this has pushed her over the edge. Dang, I will bet if the home teachers had another 12 months we would have heard faith promoting stories about home teaching and this lady.

How many people are baptized on an average day? Surely over 100. No articles on mass conversions I see?

This is what I'm seeing the most. Many of the people resigning are totally inactive or less active so I doubt there is much felt in the short term from the resignation. I do think the KK thing will negatively impact the church long term as I know most people in the church are willing to accept more equality but they go with the status that things are fine until the prophet says they aren't.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I think overal, you'll see a few thousand people leave over this. That's not a lot of people when you are talking about 5 million. They won't be noticed outside of the local sphere, probably.
I don't think people will resign over the Kelly affair (other than some already-outs who want one last hoorah). But I think this issue will fester. My fairly orthodox sister and my uber-orthodox sister-in-law have made really interesting comments about Kelly's ex-ing. Neither my sister nor SIL want the priesthood for women, but Kelly's notoriety has forced them to consider how they will explain lack of female ordination to their daughters. And neither of them have very satisfactory answers, despite a deep desire to find them. Neither will leave the church over the issue, but they do want some sort of explanation for their kids.

                      I can explain it.

                      1) God ain't running the show.
                      2) Old men are more sexist on average.
                      3) Middle aged men are sexist but slightly less than old men on average.
                      4) Young adults and 40ish slacker Mormon men like Cardiac are still elders and therefore have no credibility even though they might be less sexist.

                      • KK flubbed in delivery but change will come. Just not as soon as is helpful to growing the brand.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Would you say that the two guys who were excommunicated in 1977 flubbed in delivery?

                          • I didn't witness it first-hand. Their understanding was correct.
Kate had the right message but there may be no correct delivery for current leadership.

Thanks. I'm sure this is what they were looking for. I'll pass this along.
